Car Won't Start and Just Clicks: What It Means
When you turn the key and hear only clicking but the engine won't crank, the starter isn't getting enough power or isn't engaging. A rapid series of clicks usually means a weak or dead battery, while a single loud click more often points to the starter or its solenoid. This is one of the most common no-start situations and is usually fixable on the spot or with an inexpensive part.
Common causes
- 1
Dead or weak battery
The most common cause. The battery has just enough charge to click the solenoid but not enough to spin the starter, giving rapid clicking. A jump start that brings it to life confirms it; the battery or charging system then needs attention.
- 2
Corroded or loose battery terminals
White or green crust, or loose cable clamps, add resistance that blocks the current the starter needs. Cleaning and tightening the terminals often fixes it instantly and costs nothing.
- 3
Faulty starter solenoid
A worn solenoid can't make solid electrical contact, producing a single loud click without cranking. Tapping the starter sometimes gets one more start, which strongly points to the starter assembly.
- 4
Failing starter motor
Worn brushes or internal wear inside the starter can cause a single click and no crank even with a good battery. Usually requires starter replacement.
- 5
Bad alternator (drained battery)
A failing alternator stops charging the battery while you drive, so it eventually dies and only clicks. The battery may seem fine after a jump but die again soon after.
- 6
Poor ground or starter wiring
A corroded ground strap, damaged cable, or loose wire to the starter prevents enough current from reaching it, mimicking a dead battery.
What to do
You're not in danger, but you're likely stranded until it's resolved. First check for corroded or loose battery terminals and try a jump start, if it fires right up, suspect the battery or alternator; if you only get a single click after a good jump, suspect the starter. Have the battery and charging system tested (many auto parts stores do this free) before replacing parts.
