Glow Plug Light Flashing: What It Means and What to Do
On a diesel, the coil-shaped glow plug light normally glows briefly at startup while the plugs preheat the cylinders, then goes out. When that light flashes (rather than the steady startup glow), it's a fault warning telling you the engine management has detected a problem and may put the engine into a reduced-power safety mode. It commonly points to a glow plug or control-module fault, but on many engines it's also a catch-all alert for unrelated engine, emissions, or even brake-switch faults.
Trouble codes you may see
If you scan the car, these are the OBD-II codes most often behind this symptom:
Common causes
- 1
Faulty glow plug(s)
Worn glow plugs that no longer heat properly are the most common cause, often setting a per-cylinder code (P0671-P0678). They also cause hard cold starts and white startup smoke.
- 2
Glow plug control module / relay fault
A failing glow plug control module or relay (P0670, P0380) can flash the light and is frequently the root cause when multiple plug codes appear together.
- 3
Wiring or circuit problems
Damaged harness wiring, corroded connectors, a poor ground, or a blown fuse in the glow circuit can trip the warning and are the cheapest things to rule out first.
- 4
Engine management sensor fault
On many diesels the flashing glow light is a general engine warning. A bad crankshaft or camshaft position sensor, or another running fault, can trigger it.
- 5
DPF or emissions issue
A clogged or malfunctioning diesel particulate filter or emissions fault can show up as a flashing glow plug light on some vehicles.
- 6
Brake light switch fault (VW Group and similar)
On many VAG diesels, a failing brake light switch is a known and surprisingly common trigger for a flashing glow plug light.
What to do
A flashing glow plug light means drive gently and cautiously: the engine may be in a reduced-power safety mode, so avoid hard acceleration and high revs until it's diagnosed. Cold-start trouble points toward the glow plugs themselves, but because the light can signal several different systems, the only reliable next step is a diesel-capable diagnostic scan. Get it checked soon, as ignoring it can lead to harder starts, worse emissions, or being stuck in limp mode.
