2010 Audi Q7 Problems: 9 Known Issues

On the 2007-2015 Audi Q7, the 2007-2015 Audi Q7 (3.0T, 3.6L, TDI) experiences water pump and thermostat failures causing engine overheating. On some 2009-2011 vehicles with 3.0L TFSI or 3.0L TDI engines, Audi found that a seal inside the coolant pump can wear out prematurely and leak coolant, turning on the Coolant System Malfunction light (Audi service action 19H1). When pump fails, coolant flow drops causing rapid overheating and severe engine damage (warped cylinder heads, blown gaskets). Thermostat housings crack and leak coolant. Failure often occurs around 60k-80k miles. Preventive replacement recommended.

On the 2007-2010 Audi Q7 4.2 FSI V8 (BAR), the 4.2L FSI V8 (BAR) in the first-generation Q7 4L uses a rear-mounted timing chain drive with plastic chain guides and hydraulic tensioners. The guides embrittle and the tensioners lose their ability to take up slack, especially on engines run past their oil-change interval or on short trips where sludge forms. Owners first hear a brief rattle at cold start that grows into a constant rattle or whine, and eventually the chain jumps a tooth and sets cam/crank correlation faults. Because the chain drive is at the back of the engine, the correct repair requires pulling the engine (or engine and transmission) out of the vehicle - which is why this failure so often totals an otherwise good high-mileage Q7.

On the 2007-2015 Audi Q7, the panoramic roof on the Q7 4L drains through four corner tubes that run down the A- and C-pillars. The rear-right tube kinks behind the trim and the front corner pieces of the roof cassette are sealed poorly from the factory, so water backs up and runs down the inside of the pillars instead of out. The vehicle never enters sleep mode, so the battery is pulled down overnight or over a weekend. Owners report a car that starts fine daily but is dead after two or three days of sitting, repeated jump-starts, and batteries replaced under warranty that fail again. On the 2007-2015 Audi Q7, the Q7's blower motor is speed-controlled by a power output stage (control module/resistor pack) mounted in the HVAC housing under the passenger side of the dash. High current through an aging motor with worn brushes overheats the module and, in a well-documented pattern, melts the short section of wiring between the resistor and the blower motor. The result is a fan that works only on high, only intermittently, or not at all - and on many cars both front and rear blowers quit. Attempts to fix it by replacing just the motor or just the resistor fail because the harness pigtail itself is damaged.

The result is a slow coolant loss with an oily film that drips down the back of the block, often mistaken for a water pump or thermostat housing leak because gravity carries it downward. Owners chase the leak for months before the source is confirmed with a UV dye test and the intake removed.
