1994 Pontiac Bonneville Problems: 5 Known Issues

On the 1992-2005 Pontiac Bonneville, failing crankshaft position sensors and ignition control modules are among the most common causes of intermittent stalling and no-spark no-start conditions on 3800-powered Bonnevilles, documented by RepairPal as a known model problem. The CKP sensor's hall-effect elements degrade with heat, causing the engine to randomly die while driving — often with no trouble code — and frequently restart only after cooling down. The ICM, which needs both 18X and 3X/sync crank signals to fire the coils, exhibits the same heat-related intermittent failure.

On the 1992-2003 Pontiac Bonneville, the Eaton roots-type supercharger on the Bonneville SSEi (M62 on 1992-1995 Series I, M90 on 1996-2003 Series II) uses a plastic isolator coupler and snout bearings that wear out with age and mileage, typically past 100,000-120,000 miles. A worn coupler produces a distinctive rattle/grind at idle that disappears when revved, while failing snout bearings produce a whine or buzz that rises with engine RPM. Continued operation eventually chews up the coupler and can damage the rotor pack or seize the snout drive.

On the 1992-2005 Pontiac Bonneville, the 3800's crankshaft damper is a two-piece pulley bonded by a rubber ring; on both Series I and Series II engines the rubber dries and separates, letting the outer ring walk forward or wobble. Owners on GM Forum and the Pontiac Bonneville Club describe a sudden loud rattle at idle that quiets under throttle, a belt that squeals or walks off, and crumbled rubber under the engine. Because the crankshaft position sensor on these engines reads the interrupter ring behind the balancer, a wobbling balancer can also produce false crank-sensor faults and stalling that get misdiagnosed as the (already documented) sensor/ICM failure.

On the 1992-1996 Pontiac Bonneville, the ninth-generation Bonneville used the hydraulically modulated 4T60E through 1996 (the 4T65E arrived for 1997). This unit's line pressure is set by a vacuum modulator on the transmission case; when the modulator diaphragm ruptures it draws ATF into the intake (smoke, low fluid) and drops line pressure so the 2nd/3rd/overdrive clutches slip. Owners on the Pontiac Bonneville Club and GM Forum report 1st-gear slip, intermittent loss of 4th gear, and delayed engagement on 1992-1996 cars; particulate from burned 3rd/OD clutches then jams the shift and EPC solenoids, producing the erratic shift pattern that is often mistaken for a dead transmission.

On the 1992-2005 Pontiac Bonneville, sSE, SSEi, upper SLE and GXP Bonnevilles came with GM's Electronic Level Control: rear air-adjustable shocks, an underbody compressor, a height sensor on the rear suspension and (on 2000-2005) the Rear Integration Module, plus a trunk-mounted accessory inflator port. Across both generations owners on GM Forum and the Pontiac Bonneville Club report the rear sitting low or, less often, pumped too high: air shock bladders crack and leak, the compressor's plastic head or dryer fails so it runs constantly or not at all, the height-sensor linkage breaks or corrodes, and on 2000-2005 cars the RIM stops commanding the compressor. Parts for the 1992-1999 system are discontinued from GM, which makes repairs harder.
