On the 1998-2002 Volkswagen Beetle, recall N4 applies to certain 1998–2002 New Beetles (A4/PQ34) equipped with cruise control. Confirm eligibility by VIN with Volkswagen; brake-switch symptoms can also require diagnosis on vehicles outside the campaign. The brake light switch at the pedal can malfunction internally or be installed or adjusted wrongly. The brake lights may then stop working or stay on permanently, even when parked, which can drain the battery. On automatics the shifter may refuse to leave Park because the brake signal never arrives. The ECU cross-checks the two brake-switch circuits, so an implausible signal lights the EPC lamp, disables cruise control and stores a brake-switch code. Recall 03V265 (VW WT) had dealers inspect and replace the switch; in November 2006 it was closed and superseded by 06V183 (VW N4), under which dealers install a newly designed brake light switch.

Common Symptoms

  • Brake lights do not work
  • Brake lights stay on with the car parked, draining the battery
  • EPC warning light on
  • Cruise control inoperative
  • Automatic won't shift out of Park

How to Fix

Free recall remedy: under 06V183 (VW N4), which superseded 03V265, dealers install a newly designed brake light switch at no charge. Check the VIN first. If no recall is open, the switch fits into the pedal bracket; it must be installed and adjusted correctly or the fault returns. After replacing it, clear the code and confirm the lights, EPC lamp and cruise all work. Also rule out a blown brake-lamp bulb before blaming the switch.

On the 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, this is an aftermarket Gates water-pump recall, not evidence of a factory Beetle defect. The May 2014 verification document describes affected NAPA-sourced TFW 41127 pumps and listed WPK kits within its sales/installation scope. Sprocket failure can disrupt the timing belt and stop the engine. Eligibility requires the specified invoice/date checks and all three visual features: black sprocket, etched sprocket digits and 5868 housing casting. Engine damage requires assessment rather than an assumption of bent valves.

Common Symptoms

  • Sudden engine shutdown while driving if the timing belt fails

How to Fix

For suspected timing-belt failure, stop engine use and arrange qualified assessment before any cranking or compression testing. Ask the repair facility to follow Gates' May 2014 verification process for NAPA invoices, dates and listed pump/kit numbers. Identification requires all three specified features: a black sprocket, etched sprocket digits and 5868 cast into the housing; a US9377 stamp check alone is not the process. Contact Gates/NAPA to confirm inspection and remedy arrangements for an eligible pump. Consequential engine damage and any repair costs require separate assessment; belt failure does not establish bent valves.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

The Gates Corporation (Gates) is recalling certain aftermarket Tru-Flow Water Pumps, part number TFW 41127, sold at certain NAPA Auto Parts and/or installed by automotive service technicians after November 1, 2013 (and manufactured August 2013 through October 2013) that have a black-colored pulley/sprocket or do not have 'US9377' stamped on the water pump housing. These service replacement parts were sold for use in model year 1999-2005 Audi A4, 2000-2006 Audi TT, 1998-2005 Volkswagen Beetle, 1999-2006 Golf, 1999-2008 and 2011-2013 Volkswagen Jetta, and 2000-2005 Volkswagen Passat. In the affected water pumps, the pulley or sprocket that turns the timing belt may develop microfractures causing the timing belt to fail.

VOLKSWAGEN IS RECALLING 76,900 MY 2004-2005 NEW BEETLE AND MY 2003-2005 NEW BEETLE CONVERTIBLES EQUIPPED WITH AN ADVANCED (DUAL-STAGE) AIR BAG SYSTEM. THIS SYSTEM MAY HAVE AIR BAG FRONTAL CRASH SENSORS THAT CONTAIN A SOLDER JOINT ON THE CIRCUIT BOARD THAT MAY CRACK UNDER CERTAIN HIGH TEMPERATURE CONDITIONS. IF THIS OCCURS, THE AIR BAG INDICATOR LIGHT WILL ILLUMINATE AND THE FALLBACK ALGORITHM WILL ENSURE THAT THE FRONT AIR BAGS ALWAYS DEPLOY IN A FRONTAL CRASH IN WHICH THE VEHICLE'S DECELERATION IS HIGH ENOUGH TO ACTIVATE THE FRONTAL AIR BAGS.
