2016-2023 Audi Q2 Problems: 8 Known Issues

Japan MLIT campaign GAI-3692 covers specified 2021-2023 Audi Q2 35 TFSI and 2022-2023 Q2 35 TDI vehicles. An incorrectly installed power-supply connector at the interior fuse carrier can work loose, interrupting electrical power to the engine, instrument display or lighting. Steering and braking remain available, but an engine shutdown or loss of lighting can increase crash risk. This published scope is market- and VIN-specific.

Owner reliability surveys for the Q2 flag non-engine electrical faults (along with air-conditioning faults) as the most common complaint type. The MMI screen can freeze, go black and reboot itself (sometimes while driving), and dashboard warning lights appear with no obvious cause. Causes are usually software bugs, corrupt phone-pairing/Bluetooth data, or communication glitches between modules rather than a failed display panel. Many faults are inexpensive while under the 3-year warranty but can become costly afterwards, and owners report long parts lead-times.

UK DVSA recall R/2018/295 covers affected 2017-2018 Audi Q2 vehicles whose electro-mechanical parking brake can release inappropriately. The campaign is VIN-specific and does not establish that every Q2 in those model years is affected.

Owners of three-cylinder 1.0 TFSI and four-cylinder 1.4 TFSI Q2s have reported the toothed cambelt snapping well before Audi's stated 5-year / ~75,000-mile replacement interval, in several documented cases between roughly 39,000 and 49,000 km/miles, with full service history. Because these are interference engines, a snapped belt causes the valves to collide with the pistons, leading to catastrophic internal damage and frequently an entire engine replacement. Contributing factors cited by owners and forum moderators include the extra start/stop cyclical loading on the belt and frequent short journeys, plus belt tensioner/bolt loosening. Audi typically offered only partial goodwill rather than full coverage out of warranty.

UK DVSA recall R/2017/311 covers a small VIN-specific population of 2017 Audi Q2 vehicles whose rear wheel-bearing housings may not have received the correct hardening treatment. A housing can deform or fracture, causing noise, abnormal tyre wear and, in the most severe theoretical case, wheel separation.

Q2 petrol owners report coolant loss from a leaking water pump at relatively low mileage — one documented 2018 Q2 case at only ~30,000 miles. The EA888/EA211 TFSI family uses an integrated plastic water-pump/thermostat housing that becomes brittle and cracks (commonly at the plastic pipe ports or the shaft seal behind the drive gear), causing seepage or sudden coolant loss. A failing pump bearing can also misalign the pulley. Left unchecked, coolant loss leads to overheating and possible head-gasket damage.

Q2s fitted with the 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox exhibit jerking when pulling away, a delay/lag in shift response, and uneven gear changes, most noticeable in stop-and-go traffic. Owner reports and reliability surveys describe these symptoms appearing relatively early (often ~20,000–40,000 km). Underlying causes range from clutch-pack wear and worn solenoids to mechatronic-unit faults and overdue fluid; in worse cases the gearbox drops into limp mode.

Q2 TDI diesels (1.6 TDI / 2.0 TDI) suffer from DPF clogging when the car is mostly used for short, low-speed urban journeys. The soot filter never reaches the exhaust temperature needed to complete a passive/active regeneration, so soot accumulates, the DPF warning light comes on, and the car may enter a forced-regen cycle or limp mode. Repeated interrupted regens (driver slowing/stopping before the cycle finishes) make it worse and can dilute engine oil with diesel.
