How to Fix

Replace both rear air springs and the compressor as a set. If the air lines have cracks, replace those too. On the 2007-2014 Cadillac Escalade ESV, the power liftgate on the Escalade ESV is prone to gas strut failure due to the extra-long and heavy liftgate (longer than standard Escalade). The struts lose pressure and the liftgate won't stay open or falls unexpectedly. The power liftgate motor and latch can also fail, preventing the gate from opening or closing electrically. This is a safety hazard as the heavy gate can fall on passengers loading cargo.

Liftgate won't stay open or slowly falls down
Power liftgate opens partway then stops
Liftgate makes grinding noise when operating electrically

How to Fix

Replace both liftgate gas struts together — they are inexpensive ($30-60/pair) and easy to replace with a flathead screwdriver to pop the ball studs. If the power liftgate motor has failed, the motor assembly (GM 25965765) requires interior trim panel removal but is a 1-hour DIY job. Lubricate latch mechanism with white lithium grease annually.

On the 2002-2020 Cadillac Escalade ESV, the transfer case encoder motor that controls AWD/4WD engagement fails, causing the "Service 4WD" message and preventing 4WD engagement. The position sensor inside the encoder motor sends incorrect signals. The transfer case may also develop an internal fluid leak past the front output seal.

How to Fix

Replace the encoder motor on the transfer case. The motor is externally mounted and accessible. After replacement, a transfer case relearn procedure must be performed with a scan tool. Check and top off the transfer case fluid with the correct Auto-Trak II fluid.
