2023 Chevrolet Colorado Problems: 5 Known Issues

On the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, on a small population of 2023 Chevrolet Colorado and 2023 GMC Canyon trucks (GM estimates 17 vehicles), the front wheel hub retaining bolts were over-tightened during assembly and damaged in the process. Damaged bolts can subsequently loosen or fracture, which places excessive load on the remaining bolts and can lead to loss of vehicle control. NHTSA opened this as recall 24V237 (GM number N232431480). The tell before failure is vibration or noise from one of the front wheels while driving - owners should not dismiss a new front-end vibration on an affected truck.

On the 2015-2023 Chevrolet Colorado, a clunking or knocking noise from the front suspension when going over bumps is common. This is often caused by worn sway bar end links, upper control arm bushings, or strut mounts. The issue can be amplified by rough roads or off-road use.

On the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado 2.7L Turbo I4 L3B, on the launch year of the third-generation Colorado, GM found that a batch of 2.7L turbocharged L3B engine blocks was cast with a defect at the main oil gallery hot core pin, leaving the block already cracked or prone to cracking in service. A cracked block in that location bleeds oil pressure and can end in catastrophic engine failure. GM opened Customer Satisfaction Program N232415060, "Block Main Oil Gallery Hot Core Pin Casting Defect," covering an identified population of 2023 Colorado along with 2023 Silverado 1500 and Sierra 1500 trucks, and chose to replace the entire engine as a preventive measure rather than inspect and repair. This is specific to the 2023 model year 2.7L; it is not a defect of the 2.5L, 3.6L, or 2.8L engines from the prior generations.

On the 2023 Chevrolet Colorado, third-generation Colorado owners reported "phantom braking": the truck abruptly braking hard for an obstacle that is not there, most often on open road, overpasses, or with roadside objects in view. GM traced it to the front camera module software falsely detecting an obstacle and commanding automatic emergency braking. On the 2023-2024 Chevrolet Colorado, certain 2023-2024 Colorado trucks with the 2.7L turbocharged four - both the base L2R and the higher-output L3B - left the factory with an engine control module calibration that does not correctly control fuel injector flow rate under some driving conditions. The consequence is improper fuelling, degraded driveability, and, importantly for the owner, an emissions non-compliance. GM issued Service Update N232411311 in December 2023 to reprogram the ECM on 2023 L3B and L2R trucks, then expanded the fix to 2023-2024 L3B Colorado and Canyon trucks as Voluntary Emission Recall N242452131 (GM Recall No. N242452130). Because it is an emissions-related update GM committed to the repair being free through March 31, 2040, far past the normal warranty term.
