According to Au7o's research across NHTSA recalls, manufacturer TSBs, and owner forum reports, the 2020 CUPRA Formentor has 2 documented known issues, with 1 rated critical. The most serious is Formentor MQB Evo Electric Parking Brake Actuator Failure ($250-$900 repair). Across all issues, repair costs range from $250 to $2,500. DIY maintenance guides at au7o.io.
All 2 Known Issues
On the 2020-2024 CUPRA Formentor, the electric parking brake actuators (one per rear caliper) on MQB Evo platform — used across CUPRA Formentor/Leon/Ateca, SEAT Leon Mk4, VW Golf Mk8, Audi A3 8Y — can fail with a sudden grinding noise or refuse to release. Symptoms: brake warning light, "Parking brake fault", inability to drive away.
Common Symptoms
- parking brake fault
- will not release
- grinding from caliper
How to Fix
Single actuator replacement €250-€450 incl. coding. If both fail at similar mileage (common), replacing as a pair is more cost-effective. Use the manual emergency release procedure (button in console + key) to free the car if stuck.
On the 2020-2022 CUPRA Formentor 2.0 TSI (EA888 Gen 4), the 2.0 TSI in Formentor (EA888 Gen 3/4) is too new for definitive long-term failure patterns, but inherits two monitorable behaviors from earlier generations. (1) High-pressure fuel pump tappet noise — a ticking sound at idle that's annoying but not failure-prone (pump can be shimmed or replaced if intrusive). (2) Cold-start rattle should clear within 1-2 seconds; persistent rattle warrants chain inspection (Gen 1/2 chain-stretch issues were notionally addressed by Gen 3 in 2012, but cold-start rattles are still occasionally reported).
Common Symptoms
- cold start rattle
- check engine light
- misfire
How to Fix
HPFP tappet shim or pump replacement €350-€650. If chain rattle persists, dealer diagnostic is recommended before any €1,200-€2,500 chain replacement. Use VW 504.00 oil at 10,000 km max — extended-life intervals shorten chain life on this family.
