2017-2023 Hyundai Grandeur Problems: 6 Known Issues

Shortly after the GN7 launched, Hyundai opened a free-repair campaign for 4,818 Grandeur 2.5 GDI cars built November 16, 2022 - January 2, 2023 because the engine could stall while the car sat in Drive with the brake applied. During prolonged stops the transmission's 'neutral control' releases hydraulic pressure to save fuel; the ECU software handled electrical loads in this state poorly, causing unstable idle RPM followed by the engine shutting off. Korean outlets (Motorgraph, M Today/AutoDaily) covered the campaign, which was one of roughly 20 free-repair/recall actions logged against the GN7 in its first year.

Hyundai identifies the Grandeur among Korea-market Theta II GDI vehicles receiving expanded Knock Sensor Detection System (KSDS) coverage and a lifetime engine warranty limited to connecting-rod-bearing seizure. Hyundai's official 2019 Grandeur specification identifies its engine as the improved Theta II 2.4 GDi. Hyundai's disclosure also provides compensation terms for eligible customers who experienced engine stoppage or fire because of the covered engine defect.

A chronic problem (고질병) repeatedly cited in Korean owner communities for the Grandeur IG — and its Kia K7 sibling — is engine oil seepage from the front case (timing chain cover), typically appearing after roughly 50,000 km. The sealant between the front case and the block degrades, letting oil weep down the front of the engine; documented cases on the 3.0 V6 describe undercarriage panels soaked in oil, and the issue is also widely reported on 2.4 GDI cars. CV-joint (등속조인트) grease/oil leaks are mentioned alongside it as a related underbody finding during used-car inspections. Left alone, the leak worsens, can foul the drive belt area and triggers low-oil-level conditions.

In April 2023 Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced an official recall of 14,316 Grandeur GN7 hybrids for a configuration error in the electronic (integrated) brake system software. When Smart Cruise Control brought the car to a stop behind another vehicle on an uphill grade, the brake system could release insufficiently and let the car roll backward, creating a collision risk with vehicles behind. This was one of two official GN7 recalls in spring 2023 — alongside roughly 20 free-repair campaigns — that drew heavy Korean press criticism of the model's launch quality.

Grandeur IG models (including the 2020+ facelift) with column-mounted electric power steering (C-MDPS) commonly develop a rattling, knocking or 'clunking' noise when the wheel is turned at a stop or at low speed. The noise comes from wear in the steering column's damping components — the flexible coupling and column bearing that prevent metal-to-metal contact. As the parts wear, owners also report increased steering play and a vague or notchy steering feel. The complaint is heavily documented across Korean owner communities (Bobaedream, Clien, AutoView boards) and on Namu Wiki's 6th-generation Grandeur page. Hyundai never declared it an official defect, but Blue Hands service centers perform goodwill free repairs — originally just the coupling/bearing, and more recently full MDPS assembly replacement when needed.

First-year GN7s (production roughly October 2022 - February 2023) accumulated a cluster of documented electrical defects, each with its own Hyundai free-repair or recall campaign: (1) door-handle touch sensors with faulty internal logic that fail to unlock the flush door handles (8,475 cars); (2) LED driver modules (LDM) that can leave part of the position (width) lamps intermittently unlit in cold weather (1,961 cars); (3) hybrid battery management system software errors causing intermittent 12V battery discharge and no-start mornings (6,006 cars, fixed via OTA); (4) power trunk/tailgate control firmware faults (1,524 cars); and (5) an official March 2023 recall of about 11,200 vehicles (the Grandeur GN7 and two other Hyundai models) for communication failure between the vehicle controller and parking sensors, disabling the rear parking-distance warning and raising back-over collision risk. Korean press tallied about 20 such actions in the model's first year, affecting over 300,000 cumulative repair targets.
