2020 Hyundai Nexo Problems: 12 Known Issues

On the 2019-2021 Hyundai Nexo Fuel cell (95 kW PEM stack, three 700-bar H2 tanks), the Nexo carries three hydrogen gas detection sensors whose job is to catch a leak in the hydrogen delivery system and trigger shutdown/warning. On 2019-2021 vehicles the sensors can degrade and fail to detect hydrogen, so a real leak can develop with no warning to the driver and no automatic shutoff — the safety net for every other hydrogen fault on this vehicle silently stops working. Note that this is the sensing system, not the tank pressure-relief hardware of the later 24V-761 recall: a Nexo can be affected by both, and the sensor recall predates the TPRD recall by more than two years.

Neglecting the service is the failure mode that matters — it sits upstream of stack health and is silently skipped on cars whose owners cannot find a dealer willing to do it.

The degradation is accelerated by frequent cold starts, high-humidity environments, and operation at sustained high power output. A California class action alleges the Nexo is defective and misleadingly sold, citing incomplete fills, limited service availability, parking sensor and navigation problems.
