2016 Kia Sedona Problems: 8 Known Issues

On the 2016 Kia Sedona, a narrow build window of 2016 Sedonas — vans manufactured 27 April 2015 through 27 June 2015 — received shift lock holder components produced out of specification by the supplier. The shift lock lever fails to return to its locked position, so the lever can be moved out of Park into any gear without pressing the brake pedal, with the ignition on OR off. Approximately 7,263 Sedonas are covered by NHTSA 22V-612 (Kia SC246), with owner letters mailed 7 October 2022. This is a build-date-limited defect, not a 2016-model-year-wide one — the same campaign also covers 2016 Sorento.

On the 2015-2021 Kia Sedona, the 2015-2021 Sedona with the 6-speed automatic transmission develops shuddering during gear changes, harsh shifts, and delayed engagement. The torque converter lock-up clutch wears prematurely, and the transmission valve body develops stuck solenoids. Kia released multiple TCU software updates to improve shift quality. In severe cases, torque converter or complete transmission replacement is needed.

On the 2015-2018 Kia Sedona, on 2015-2018 YP-generation Sedonas fitted with MANUALLY adjusted front passenger seats, the Occupant Detection System wiring harness routed under the seat cushion bends every time the seat is occupied. Repeated flexing eventually fractures the wire. A broken ODS harness leaves the system unable to classify the occupant, so the front passenger airbag can deploy even with a child in a child seat in that position. Kia recalled 94,389 vans under NHTSA 19V-109 (Kia SC175) in March 2019. Note the trim discipline: vans with POWER passenger seats route the harness differently and are not in this population. The same generation is also a heavy source of ordinary airbag-lamp complaints traced to the passenger seat occupant-classification mat.

On the 2015-2018 Kia Sedona, distinct from the mechanical cable and latch failures on these vans, this is a software defect: the Power Sliding Door Control Module on 2015-2018 Sedonas was programmed with an obstruction-detection threshold too high to catch certain obstructions, so the door continues closing instead of stopping and reversing. With children the likely occupants of a minivan doorway, the injury exposure is obvious. Kia recalled 106,428 vans built 21 July 2014 through 6 December 2017 under NHTSA 18V-338 (Kia SC164) in June 2018.

On the 2015-2021 Kia Sedona 3.3L Lambda II GDI V6 (G6DH), the YP-generation Sedona's 3.3L Lambda II GDI V6 (G6DH) consumes oil between changes and, in the worst cases, empties the sump and seizes with no warning lamp beforehand. Owners describe the sequence consistently: a knocking noise develops, then a sudden loss of all oil, then loss of motive power — while the low-oil and check-engine lamps stay dark. A 2016 Sedona owner petitioned NHTSA in February 2024 (defect petition DP24-002) seeking an investigation. NHTSA denied the petition in July 2024, but the reasoning matters: ODI declined because the same 3.3L Lambda II loss-of-motive-power question was ALREADY open under investigation PE23-019 covering 2016-2017 Sorento with that engine. The denial is not a finding that the engine is sound. Note the engine discipline — this is the 3.3L GDI Lambda II, NOT the 3.8L Lambda of the 2006-2012 vans nor the belt-driven 3.5L Sigma of the first generation.

On the 2015-2021 Kia Sedona, the 2015-2021 Sedona commonly experiences dead batteries due to a parasitic drain from the power sliding door control module. The module fails to enter sleep mode when the vehicle is off, continuously drawing 300-500mA from the battery. The battery drains overnight or within 2-3 days of sitting. The issue is often intermittent and difficult to diagnose at the dealer.

On the 2015-2017 Kia Sedona, the Smart Junction Box software on 2015-2017 Sedonas can misinterpret signals from the multifunction stalk and activate the turn signal in the direction OPPOSITE to the one the driver selected — the van signals right while the driver turns left. Kia recalled approximately 88,576 vans under NHTSA 21V-725 (Kia SC217), with owner letters mailed 12 November 2021. Because this is a logic fault rather than a hardware failure it is intermittent and easy to dismiss as driver error, which is why it took years to surface as a campaign.

On the 2002-2021 Kia Sedona, the Sedona carries both a front and a rear evaporator, and the rear circuit is what makes its A/C failures distinctive. Long refrigerant lines run the length of the van underneath the floor, where they corrode and leak; the rear evaporator and its O-ring connections are additional leak points a typical front-only vehicle does not have. Separately, forum members report a specific electrical failure mode on the compressor: the clutch COIL goes open circuit, so 12 volts is present at the coil but the clutch never engages and the compressor never turns — a symptom that looks exactly like low refrigerant to a parts-store gauge set. The front condenser also sits fully exposed at the nose of the van and is commonly punctured by road debris.
