2023 Mercedes-Benz EQS Problems: 15 Known Issues

On the 2023-2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS, on a large population of EQ vehicles, continuous diagnostic requests from other onboard control units can overload the battery management system's (BMS) memory capacity. This causes the BMS to open the high-voltage contactors, disconnecting the battery pack from the powertrain and producing a sudden loss of drive power. Mercedes-Benz USA recalled 14,912 EQE/EQS/EQE SUV/EQS SUV vehicles in May 2024 (NHTSA campaign 24V372000). Unlike many EQ software fixes, this remedy could not be delivered over the air and required a dealer visit, making it a recurring frustration for owners. The same BMS software is used on EU-spec cars.

The campaign was botched on some cars: in April 2025 a follow-up recall (25V255000) was filed because technicians had installed fuse boxes not intended for the specific model or variant during the 2024 repair, producing contact interruptions or wrong amperage values and re-creating the loss-of-propulsion risk. On the 2022-2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS Electric, the EQS experiences parasitic 12V battery drain when parked for extended periods, preventing the car from waking up or responding to the key fob. Despite having a massive high-voltage battery, the 12V system powers critical wake-up circuits and can discharge in as little as 7-10 days of inactivity.

On the 2022-2025 Mercedes-Benz EQS, filed June 5, 2025, this recall covers 2022-2025 EQS sedans and EQS SUVs (plus EQE, EQE SUV and S-Class) whose Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System software can emit the wrong external pedestrian warning sound in reverse, so the vehicle fails FMVSS 141 minimum-sound requirements for hybrid and electric vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists may not recognize that the near-silent EQS is backing up. The US population is small (94 vehicles reported at filing) but the campaign spans 2022-2024 EQS sedans and 2023-2025 EQS SUVs.
