2019 Volkswagen Atlas Problems: 13 Known Issues

On the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, the Front Assist forward-collision/AEB system on the 2019 Atlas can activate inadvertently, applying hard braking when the road ahead is clear. NHTSA upgraded its probe to an engineering analysis (EA24004) covering about 101,066 vehicles after reviewing reports including 4 with injuries and 1 crash; the 2019 model year shows the highest rate of incidents (2018 was dropped from the probe). This is distinct from the door-harness braking recall (22V-152), which traces to corrosion rather than the radar/camera AEB system.

On the 2018-2024 Volkswagen Atlas, the Atlas second-row bench and captain's chairs tip and slide forward for third-row access. Owners report the latching mechanism does not always re-engage with the floor striker when the seat is returned upright, so the seat looks locked but is not. Under hard braking or in a collision the seat can pitch forward, throwing second-row occupants into the front seatbacks. The alleged defect drove a class action covering 2018-2024 Atlas vehicles; VW denied the defect but settled in 2025 with an extended warranty on the latching mechanism (10 years / 100,000 miles) plus reimbursement for prior repairs.

On the 2018-2020 Volkswagen Atlas 3.6L VR6 FSI, nHTSA’s PE 21-008 investigation concerned 2018–2020 3.6 L Atlas/Atlas Cross Sport injector leaks. Long injectors on cylinders 1,3 and 5 use extension pipes whose support rings or O-rings can be damaged, absent or misaligned. VW reported most allegations involved internal leakage and misfires, not fuel entering the engine bay. NHTSA closed the investigation in October 2022 after finding a low early-life failure rate; closure was not a determination that no safety defect exists.
