2017 BMW 2 Series Problems: 14 Known Issues

On the 2014-2021 BMW 2 Series, the valve cover gasket on both N20 and B48 engines in the 2 Series degrades over time, causing oil leaks from the top of the engine. Oil seeps down the sides of the engine and can reach the exhaust manifold, creating a burning oil smell and potential fire hazard. The integrated valve cover also houses the PCV valve, which can fail simultaneously and cause additional issues.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series, bMW says the engine may run rough or hesitate when accelerating from a stationary position, with fault code 21A02D (combustion control: valve lift correction when at idle) stored in the engine computer. BMW gives the cause as a software error in the Digital Motor Electronics (DME).

On the 2014-2025 BMW 2 Series, every US 2 Series engine (N20, N26, N55, B46, B48, B58) is direct injected, so no fuel washes over the back of the intake valves. Oil vapor from the crankcase ventilation system and EGR-side carbon bake onto the valve stems and ports, progressively choking airflow and disturbing the intake charge. Owners report the classic pattern: rough cold idle, hesitation on tip-in and between roughly 1,500-2,500 rpm, hard hot restarts, and eventually cylinder-specific misfire codes that do not resolve with coils and plugs. Deposits are usually meaningful by 60,000-80,000 miles and severe by 100,000, and are worse on short-trip and city-driven cars. It is frequently misdiagnosed and treated with repeated coil/injector replacement before anyone pulls the intake manifold and looks.

On the 2014-2023 BMW 2 Series, bMW 2 Series models with N20, B46, and B48 engines commonly develop oil leaks from valve cover gaskets and oil filter housing gaskets. The plastic valve cover warps from heat cycles, causing gasket failure and oil leakage onto the exhaust manifold. The oil filter housing, which bolts to the engine block with its own gasket, also develops leaks. These are wear items that typically fail between 60,000-100,000 miles. Oil drips onto hot exhaust, causing burning smell but rarely major issues if addressed promptly.

On the 2015-2021 BMW 2 Series, the F23 2 Series Convertible uses an electro-hydraulic roof: a hydro unit (pump) feeds cylinders that raise the top and the soft-top lid. Failure is progressive and predictable. The cylinder rod seals — particularly the soft-top lid cylinders — weep hydraulic fluid, the system loses pressure, and the roof slows down and then stops partway through the cycle, usually with the lid or the top locked in an intermediate position. The hydro unit (p/n 54347421753) also wears and loses pressure while still audibly pumping. Micro-switch failures and chafed wiring in the roof harness produce a similar mid-cycle stop with a different root cause. These problems are age-related as well as mileage-related, so low-mileage garage-kept cars are not immune.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series All, bMW says the paint on the door jamb above the door striker can be scratched because the door's inner window cavity seal is abrasive and scuffs the jamb when the door is opened and closed.

On the 2016-2021 BMW 2 Series All, bMW says an "SOS malfunction" message may show in the instrument cluster, pressing the E-Call/SOS button in the overhead console may do nothing, and fault B7F33C may be stored in the telematics control unit. BMW names two causes: a software file missing from the telematics unit, or a water leak at the "shark fin" roof antenna that corrodes the telematics unit.

On the 2014-2021 BMW 2 Series, f22 owners report repeat dead batteries where a brand-new battery goes flat within hours or days. Two distinct root causes dominate. First, a module fails to go to sleep — the car's bus stays awake and draws well above the normal 50-85 mA quiescent current, so the battery is flat overnight. Second, the Intelligent Battery Sensor clamped to the negative terminal fails and reports incorrect voltage/current/temperature to the power management module, which then either undercharges or overcharges the battery and can itself prevent the modules from sleeping. Compounding it, a replacement battery that is never registered to the car is charged on the old battery's aging profile and dies prematurely — a very common cause of a 'second dead battery' after a DIY replacement.

On the 2017-2025 BMW 2 Series B48, the B48 four-cylinder turbo engine in the 230i and 228i Gran Coupe suffers from coolant loss, often traced to the plastic coolant expansion tank cracking under pressure. The tank develops hairline cracks at the seams that are difficult to see visually. Coolant can also leak from the electric water pump connection and coolant hose quick-connect fittings that become brittle with age.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series, bMW says that after an automatic engine start by the start-stop system (MSA), the transmission can intermittently go into Park "P" or Neutral "N" without any driver input. BMW says it can be sporadic and hard to reproduce, with no faults stored, and gives the cause as an error in the engine computer (DME) software.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series All, bMW says a ticking noise can come from a front wheel while cornering at low speed without the brakes applied. BMW gives the cause as microscopic movement between the inner face of the brake disc and the wheel bearing flange on cars with lightweight brake discs.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series, bMW says a faint knocking or fluttering noise can be heard from inside the fuel tank while driving slowly at low rpm or while idling, which owners may describe as a "helicopter" noise from the rear. BMW gives the cause as pressure fluctuations from the tank ventilation valve making the filler-pipe non-return valve vibrate.

On the 2017-2021 BMW 2 Series All, bMW says a groaning, scraping or squeaking noise can come from the steering wheel area inside the car when the wheel is turned. BMW lists possible causes: a misaligned or poorly lubricated steering column switch cluster, the coil spring cassette, an incorrectly installed column shroud, or the steering column itself.
