2022 BMW iX Problems: 17 Known Issues

NHTSA records the consequence as an improperly connected or assembled CCU that 'can interrupt electrical power while driving and result in an engine stall, increasing the risk of a crash.' On the iX the CCU is the combined on-board charger and DC/DC converter, so a fault there simultaneously threatens both traction power and the 12V supply that runs steering assist, brake assist and lighting. This is consistent with the 2023 iX complaint file, which contains multiple reports of losing propulsion and, in the worst cases, of losing power-assisted steering and braking together at speed - one complainant describing that they 'lost power assisted steering AND power assisted braking. I had to decelerate with no power brakes.' The remedy is replacement of the CCU, not a software update.

On the 2022-2024 BMW iX, nHTSA campaign 23V295000 recalls BMW iX xDrive50 (and certain i4) vehicles whose high-voltage battery cell monitoring circuit - the CSC board that measures individual cell voltages and temperatures and reports them to the battery management controller - was built with electrical connections that were not properly secured. When a monitoring connection intermittently opens, the battery management system loses valid cell data and, because it cannot verify pack safety, commands an immediate protective shutdown of the high-voltage system. NHTSA records the consequence bluntly as 'An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.' On the iX this presents as the drive system dropping out with no throttle response while rolling, usually with a red drivetrain warning, and it can occur at any speed. It is often confused with the 25V-395 drive-motor software campaign because the symptom is identical, but 23V-295 is a hardware defect in the pack's sensing harness and cannot be resolved by a software update. The failure tends to be intermittent early on - a single unexplained shutdown that clears on a restart - before becoming repeatable.

NHTSA states the consequence as: 'Battery module failure may lead to a shutdown of the high-voltage system which can result in a loss of drive power, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, module failure increases the risk of a fire.' BMW says it has no reports of thermal events, accidents or injuries; its forecasting indicated that module-frame damage could become possible from the latter part of 2026 with repeated charging, so the recall is precautionary. Interim owner notification letters went out September 11, 2025, and remedy notification letters followed in December 2025. Only about 130 iX vehicles (136 across all three models) are included. Owners typically never notice the defect because Valet Parking Mode is rarely used, which is precisely why this campaign has a low completion rate relative to BMW's other iX software recalls, and it lingers as an open item that surfaces during a pre-purchase VIN check on used 2022-2023 iX cars. The remedy is a free head unit software update and is often bundled with the HU-H4/H5 infotainment updates the car needs anyway.

On the 2022-2023 BMW iX, nHTSA campaign 23V079000 recalls BMW iX (and X1) vehicles in which the driver's front airbag may have been manufactured incorrectly and can fail to deploy in a crash. On the 2022-2024 BMW iX, nHTSA campaign 23V409000 recalls BMW iX xDrive50 and iX M60 vehicles for a control-logic defect in which the driver can unintentionally reactivate cruise control while turning the steering wheel at low speeds. Because of the layout of the cruise control activation button on the steering wheel, the driver's hand can inadvertently press it during a steering input, and reactivation produces an unexpected increase in speed that BMW's recall report describes as slight. NHTSA states the consequence as 'A sudden increase in vehicle speed can increase the risk of a crash.'
