2008 Cadillac CTS Problems: 7 Known Issues

On the 2008-2009 Cadillac CTS, the 2008 and 2009 Cadillac CTS is included in NHTSA recall 10V240000 when it was built with the heated washer fluid system (HWFS). The defect is an electrical short in the heated washer module's printed circuit board. GM ran a 2008 recall that added a fuse to the control circuit harness to limit what that short could do, but reports of thermal incidents continued on modules that had already been through that repair. NHTSA states that the heated washer module may ignite and a fire may occur. Note the narrower year range here than for GM's trucks — only the 2008 and 2009 CTS are listed.

On the 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS, on certain 2003-2014 Cadillac CTS vehicles, key-ring weight, road conditions or another jarring event can move the ignition switch out of Run, turn off the engine and prevent airbag deployment in a crash.

On the 2008-2014 Cadillac CTS, the front doors of the 2008-2014 CTS do not use a mechanical cable to the latch. Pulling the outside handle closes an electronic micro-switch in the handle base, which commands the latch actuator to release. When the micro-switch or its connector corrodes or wears out, the doors will still unlock with the fob but the door will not open from outside - owners report having to reach in from the other door or through a window. Failures often cascade: multiple owners on Cadillac Owners Forum report a second and third handle failing within weeks of the first. The failure is usually diagnosed incorrectly as a bad lock actuator, which is a much more expensive part.

On the 2007-2011 Cadillac CTS, the 3.6L LLT direct-injection V6 used in the 2008-2011 CTS (and the 2007 gen-1 3.6L LY7) is among the best-documented GM V6 failures: the primary and secondary timing chains elongate well before 100,000 miles, throwing off intake/exhaust cam correlation. Chain wear is strongly accelerated by extended oil-change intervals and low oil level, which starve the hydraulic chain tensioners. GM acknowledged the defect with Special Coverage bulletin 11340 (revisions A/B/C) extending timing-chain coverage to 10 years / 120,000 miles on affected models including the 2007-2009 CTS, and with service bulletin 12-06-01-009F describing the updated chain/tensioner/guide kit. This is an LLT/LY7 direct-injection-era issue and should not be attributed to the later LFX or to the 2.0L LTG four.

On the 2008-2011 Cadillac CTS, on some 2008-2011 CTS models the throttle-position sensor can cause the engine to run rough, illuminate the check engine light and/or an engine reduced power message, and reduce engine power. GM recognized the condition with Special Coverage Adjustment 14582, which covered it for 10 years / 120,000 miles from the original in-service date, whichever came first, regardless of ownership.

On the 2004-2012 Cadillac CTS, the 3.6L V6 pulls crankcase vapor through a fixed-orifice PCV passage integrated into the valve cover rather than a serviceable PCV valve. The orifice sludges up and the baffle behind it does a poor job of separating oil from the vapor stream, so liquid oil is drawn into the intake and burned. Owners across the first- and second-generation 3.6L cars report consumption in the range of a quart every 1,500-2,500 miles with no external leak and no smoke visible from the driver's seat. GM addressed it partially with a redesigned driver's-side valve cover carrying an improved baffle, and later revised the PCV orifice size on the LLT around the 2013-2014 timeframe. Because there is no drip, this gets missed until the low-oil light comes on - and on this engine, low oil is exactly what kills the timing chain tensioners.

On the 2004-2014 Cadillac CTS, the engine-driven water pump on the 3.6L V6 (LY7, LLT and LFX) develops a weep at the shaft seal. What makes this failure hard to catch is that many CTS pumps leak only when the system is hot and fully pressurized; the orange-pink DEX-COOL evaporates off the hot block and leaves little more than a crusty residue, so a cold inspection at the dealer finds nothing. Owners on Cadillac Owners Forum describe chasing a slowly dropping coolant level for months with repeated 'no leak found' visits. Left alone the pump eventually fails outright, and on an aluminum-head V6 that means overheating and possible head gasket or head damage. Note the LLT also has a small auxiliary electric coolant pump, which is a different part and a different failure.
