2020 Cadillac XT4 Problems: 11 Known Issues

On the 2019-2020 Cadillac XT4, certain 2019-2020 XT4 vehicles equipped with Surround Vision (RPO UV2) are included in recall 22V868. A VPM software anomaly can interrupt communication with the rear camera, reducing rear visibility and increasing backing risk. The VIN determines inclusion and the required remedy.

On the 2019-2021 Cadillac XT4, the front DRL and turn-signal LED module in the XT4 headlamp assembly runs hot and fails. Owners report the light first going dim, then dead, and at least one teardown found the modules had been assembled with no heatsink thermal compound between the LED board and its heat spreader, which is exactly the condition that cooks an LED driver. Failures show up on one or both sides, and one owner reported the signal housing physically burned/melted, which failed a state safety inspection. Because the DRL and front turn signal share the module, the vehicle loses both its daytime conspicuity and its front turn indication on that corner.

On the 2020 Cadillac XT4, gM bulletin 20-NA-087 covers a 2020 XT4 equipped with Premium Audio RPO UQS and infotainment IOS, IOU or IOT when the display is blank or black and recovers after an ignition cycle, or audio or video is lost. The bulletin applies only when the radio software is below U146/V146.

On the 2019-2020 Cadillac XT4, 2019 and 2020 Cadillac XT4 crossovers are among the GM vehicles recalled under campaign 20V668000 for a start/stop transmission accumulator whose endcap may be missing bolts from the factory. With the endcap not fully bolted down, transmission oil can leak out of the accumulator. GM's filing states the leak may progress to a loss of propulsion — the XT4 can stop driving — which increases the risk of a crash, and that transmission fluid reaching an ignition source raises the risk of fire. This is a build defect rather than a wear item, so an affected XT4 can be at risk regardless of mileage until the accumulator has been inspected.

On the 2019-2024 Cadillac XT4 LSY 2.0T, two related 9T50 nine-speed complaints that are distinct from the coolant-contamination shudder: first, a clutch-like pop or jerk in first through third gear while decelerating, present from new on some vehicles; second, the transmission never selects 9th gear in normal automatic operation - owners can only reach 9th by using the paddle shifter or by dropping into manual mode and flicking back to auto. Dealers cite GM bulletin 21-NA-181, which characterizes reduced top-gear usage as normal efficiency-driven shift scheduling, but owners report the same vehicle holding 9th once manually commanded, which points to shift-scheduling calibration behavior rather than a hardware fault. A reprogram and relearn alone frequently does not change it.

On the 2020 Cadillac XT4, the 2020 Cadillac XT4 is one of the vehicles included in GM's recall of Continental tires that were cured for too long at the tire plant. The problem is entirely in the tire construction: over-curing can lead to a break in the sidewall with sudden air loss, or to a belt edge separation that results in tread and belt loss. GM states that either condition can cause a loss of vehicle control and raise the risk of a crash. Because the campaign also covers Continental tires sold to the aftermarket for model year 2018-2021 vehicles, XT4 owners who replaced tires during that period should have those checked too.

On the 2019-2022 Cadillac XT4 LSY 2.0T, on the 2.0L LSY turbo, the camshaft carrier assembly bolts between the cylinder head and the cam cover, and its sealing surface (along with the intake manifold gasket area) develops an external oil leak, usually discovered during a routine oil-change multipoint inspection between roughly 20,000 and 55,000 miles. Oil runs down the passenger side of the block. This is not oil consumption through the PCV path - it is a discrete external seal failure. Multiple owners report dealers describing it as a known XT4 pattern and quoting large repairs because access requires substantial teardown; some quotes involve pulling the engine or extensive top-end disassembly, and several owners needed multiple return visits before the leak was actually stopped.

On the 2019-2025 Cadillac XT4 2.0T LSY, the XT4 uses the 2.0T LSY engine which is an evolution of the LTG found in the ATS/CTS. The LSY has improved reliability but shares some issues including PCV system problems and turbo coolant line leaks. The turbo coolant lines can develop leaks at the connections, causing coolant loss and potential turbo damage from overheating. The PCV valve/cover can fail causing oil consumption. These issues typically appear between 40,000-80,000 miles.

On the 2019-2025 Cadillac XT4 2.0L Turbo, the 2.0L turbocharged engine in the XT4 consumes oil at a higher-than-expected rate, with some owners reporting a quart consumed every 2,000-3,000 miles. The issue is related to the piston ring design and turbocharger oil scavenge system. GM has not issued a formal service bulletin addressing the root cause.

On the 2019-2022 Cadillac XT4, aWD XT4s use a twin-clutch rear drive unit with a front-axle disconnect that decouples the driveshaft for fuel economy. When the disconnect actuator, its position sensor, or the rear drive unit clutch control fails, the driver information center posts "Service All Wheel Drive System" and the vehicle reverts to front-wheel drive. Owners report the message appearing at very low mileage - CarComplaints logs the 2020 average at roughly 2,000 miles - which points to a component or calibration defect rather than wear. The vehicle remains drivable in FWD, but traction in snow and rain is materially reduced and the fault is often intermittent, clearing on a restart and returning later.

On the 2020-2025 Cadillac XT4, a loud high-pitched squeal comes from the front brakes at low speed, most reliably on the first few stops of the morning and when backing out of a garage, then disappears for the rest of the drive cycle. Inspection consistently finds the pads have plenty of material left and the wear sensors are not contacting, so this is a friction-material and anti-noise-hardware resonance issue rather than worn brakes. GM addressed the condition for the 2020 model year in bulletin 20-NA-002, but owners of later XT4s report the identical noise and are told the bulletin does not apply to their model year, leaving them without a covered repair.
