2021 Volkswagen ID.4 Problems: 13 Known Issues

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 suffers from 12V auxiliary battery drain, leaving the vehicle unable to start despite having a fully charged high-voltage battery. The 12V battery powers the vehicle's computers, door locks, and startup systems. Parasitic drain from always-on modules (telematics, battery management) depletes the small 12V battery, especially if the vehicle sits for more than a few days. VW issued a software update to improve 12V battery charging management, but the issue persists for many owners.

On the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, recall 22V162000 (VW 93O2) covers 356 selected U.S. model-year 2021 ID.4s. Faulty solder joints on the flexible printed circuit assembly inside the high-voltage battery can produce an unreliable connection, causing breakdown or stalling and increasing crash risk. A high-voltage-system warning may appear in the instrument panel.

On the 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the flush electronic door handles on the ID.4 use an insufficiently sealed housing that allows water to seep into the door-handle circuit board assembly. Moisture causes electrical shorts in the handle electronics, which can falsely trigger the latch and cause a door to unlatch or open on its own, including while driving. An early warning many owners report is an unusual clicking sound from the handle. VW has issued multiple recalls for this defect (NHTSA 24V651 covering ~98,800 MY2021-2024 vehicles, plus earlier smaller campaigns), and it triggered a U.S. stop-sale and a production halt at the Chattanooga plant.

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 infotainment system (ID. Software) is plagued by slow response times, phantom touch inputs, navigation errors, and failed over-the-air (OTA) updates. The capacitive touch sliders for climate and volume are particularly frustrating, often requiring multiple attempts. OTA updates have bricked some vehicles, requiring dealer intervention. VW has released multiple major software versions (1.0 through 3.5+) with each improving stability, but owners on earlier versions may need a dealer visit for the update.

On the 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 experiences DC fast charging failures at public charging stations, including sessions not starting, charging stopping prematurely, and speeds well below the rated maximum (125 kW for 2021, 135 kW for 2022). On the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, recall 22V858000 (VW 69EH) covers 55 selected 2021 ID.4s built November 26–December 10, 2021. The passenger airbag may have been folded incorrectly during supplier assembly. Out-of-position testing identified potentially excessive neck loading; the airbag may not provide intended protection and could increase injury risk.

On the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, two recalls affect selected 2021 ID.4s. Campaign 21V606000 (VW 69CR) addresses early release of the automatic locking retractor and inspects the front passenger and rear-center belts. On the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, on early ID.4s the high-voltage battery management control module software is overly sensitive and can reset or deactivate the pulse inverter while driving. When this happens the electric drive motor briefly loses power until the module finishes restarting, producing an unexpected loss of propulsion that raises crash risk. NHTSA recall 23V040 (VW code 97ZZ) covers 20,904 MY2021 vehicles built between May 2020 and January 2022. This is a propulsion/software fault, distinct from a depleted 12V auxiliary battery.

On the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 uses two electric coolant pumps in the thermal loop - the V468 low-temperature-circuit pump and the V590 high-voltage battery coolant pump. On the 2021 ID.4, Volkswagen bulletin 93-21-02 addresses the message "Electrical system not working correctly. Please service vehicle." with battery-pack coolant pump DTCs P0CFF00 (pump stuck) and/or P2B2800 (pump performance). The bulletin notes the V590 pump may not run during the guided fill/bleed procedure, so air can remain in the cooling system; it prescribes a pressurised fill/bleed and pump output test, and further V590 diagnosis only if that fails. Owners on the VW ID forum have also tracked coolant pump replacements on early ID.4s.

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, a widely reported design complaint: the fixed panoramic glass roof produces loud creaking/squeaking sounds, especially in cold (sub-freezing) weather when the rubber roof seal hardens and the glass flexes against the body over bumps and on hard turns. The noise tends to appear in dry cold air and often disappears once the cabin warms up. It is reported across many cars including First Edition models, indicating a gasket/mounting design issue rather than isolated defects.
