2023 Volkswagen ID.4 Problems: 14 Known Issues

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 suffers from 12V auxiliary battery drain, leaving the vehicle unable to start despite having a fully charged high-voltage battery. The 12V battery powers the vehicle's computers, door locks, and startup systems. Parasitic drain from always-on modules (telematics, battery management) depletes the small 12V battery, especially if the vehicle sits for more than a few days. VW issued a software update to improve 12V battery charging management, but the issue persists for many owners.

On the 2023-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, certain ID.4 high-voltage battery cell modules (SK On-supplied) can contain misaligned/shifted electrodes from production, which can lead to internal self-discharge, reduced range and performance, thermal runaway and battery fire. VW addressed it with two related campaigns: a large software recall installing Self-Discharge Detection (SDD) software for MY2023-2025 (~43,881 vehicles) and a smaller hardware recall replacing suspect modules. Affected owners are advised in interim guidance to limit charging and, for the hardware-affected cars, park outside after charging. Documented field failures (thermal events) occurred in 2024 and 2025.

On the 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the flush electronic door handles on the ID.4 use an insufficiently sealed housing that allows water to seep into the door-handle circuit board assembly. The airbag may not inflate properly, increasing injury risk in a crash. Volkswagen identifies a possible rattle from the passenger side of the dashboard as a warning; not every affected vehicle necessarily produces it.

On the 2023-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the roller sunshade fabric for the panoramic glass roof does not consistently meet Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 302 'Flammability of Interior Materials.' Internal testing found unacceptable variability in the fabric's burn rate, sometimes burning faster than the regulation allows, which in the event of a vehicle fire could increase injury risk to occupants. This is a camera-module hardware fault, separate from the broader infotainment screen blank/reboot software issues.

On the 2023-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, recall 25V434000 (VW 42HX) includes selected 2023–2024 ID.4s whose chassis, brake or suspension bolts may have been incorrectly tightened by the supplier. A loosening bolt can impair vehicle control and increase crash risk. The June 2025 report lists 174 model-year 2023 and 177 model-year 2024 ID.4s; its 546-vehicle total also includes Atlas models. Noise while driving may be a warning.

On the 2023 Volkswagen ID.4, recall 22V830000 (VW 19Q9) covers 393 selected 2023 ID.4s built September 2–October 17, 2022. An incorrectly assembled motor sealing ring can allow coolant into the high-voltage system. Resulting electrical disturbances may affect safety-related control units, potentially including unintended airbag deployment, increasing crash risk.

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, a widely reported design complaint: the fixed panoramic glass roof produces loud creaking/squeaking sounds, especially in cold (sub-freezing) weather when the rubber roof seal hardens and the glass flexes against the body over bumps and on hard turns. The noise tends to appear in dry cold air and often disappears once the cabin warms up.
