2024 Volkswagen ID.4 Problems: 11 Known Issues

On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, the ID.4 suffers from 12V auxiliary battery drain, leaving the vehicle unable to start despite having a fully charged high-voltage battery. The 12V battery powers the vehicle's computers, door locks, and startup systems. Parasitic drain from always-on modules (telematics, battery management) depletes the small 12V battery, especially if the vehicle sits for more than a few days. VW issued a software update to improve 12V battery charging management, but the issue persists for many owners.

On the 2023-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, certain ID.4 high-voltage battery cell modules (SK On-supplied) can contain misaligned/shifted electrodes from production, which can lead to internal self-discharge, reduced range and performance, thermal runaway and battery fire. On the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, condensation can form inside the Onboard Charger with integrated DC/DC converter (OCDC, a Bosch-supplied unit) because the printed circuit board lacks sufficient protective conformal coating. Moisture causes electromigration on the PCB and the OCDC fails, so it can no longer charge the 12-volt battery from the high-voltage pack. The result is non-start conditions, and if driven until the 12V battery depletes, a loss of motive power and electronically assisted functions. On the 2021-2024 Volkswagen ID.4, the flush electronic door handles on the ID.4 use an insufficiently sealed housing that allows water to seep into the door-handle circuit board assembly. Moisture causes electrical shorts in the handle electronics, which can falsely trigger the latch and cause a door to unlatch or open on its own, including while driving. An early warning many owners report is an unusual clicking sound from the handle. On the 2021-2025 Volkswagen ID.4, a widely reported design complaint: the fixed panoramic glass roof produces loud creaking/squeaking sounds, especially in cold (sub-freezing) weather when the rubber roof seal hardens and the glass flexes against the body over bumps and on hard turns.
