2020 Acura RDX Problems: 7 Known Issues

On the 2019-2020 Acura RDX, certain 2019-2020 RDX vehicles were built with improperly manufactured front seat belt buckle channels. The channel can interfere with the release button, so the buckle does not fully latch — or appears latched but does not securely retain the tongue. An occupant who believes they are belted may not be restrained in a crash. NHTSA campaign 23V158 (owner letters October 2023) is an expansion of the earlier 20V314 campaign, meaning some vehicles previously outside the range were pulled in later; owners who checked their VIN in 2020 and came up clear should check again.

On the 2019-2020 Acura RDX K20C4 2.0L Turbo I4, third-generation RDXs are included in Honda's expansion of the industry-wide Denso fuel pump recall. The in-tank low-pressure fuel pump module was built with impellers manufactured at an improper density; the impeller absorbs fuel, swells, and deforms until it contacts the pump housing and the pump seizes. Once the pump stops delivering fuel the engine will not start, or — the safety risk NHTSA cites — will stall while being driven, causing an unexpected loss of motive power in traffic. Acura notified NHTSA of this campaign in December 2023 covering certain 2019-2020 RDX vehicles.

On the 2019-2023 Acura RDX 2.0L K20C6 Turbo I4, the True Touchpad Interface infotainment system in the third-gen RDX suffers from random reboots, input lag, and touchpad calibration drift. The system frequently loses its cursor position, making menu navigation frustrating and occasionally dangerous when the driver attempts adjustments while driving.

On the 2019-2025 Acura RDX, the 2.0L K20C4 turbo in the 3rd-gen RDX is documented to suffer oil DILUTION rather than consumption — unburned fuel from direct injection washes past the rings during cold-start cycles (especially short trips in cold climates) and accumulates in the crankcase. Owners typically see the oil level RISE above the full mark, with a strong gasoline smell on the dipstick. Long-term, the diluted oil loses film strength and accelerates bearing/cam wear. Acura issued software calibration updates under TSB 22-039 to reduce cold-start enrichment time.

On the 2019-2025 Acura RDX 2.0L K20C6 Turbo I4, the 10-speed automatic in the third-gen RDX exhibits harsh shifts during 1-2 and 2-3 upshifts, particularly when the transmission is cold. Owners also report a noticeable hesitation when accelerating from a complete stop, with a 1-2 second delay before the transmission engages that feels like the vehicle is going to stall.

On the 2019-2023 Acura RDX, third-generation RDX owners report a loud high-pitched squeal when the brakes are lightly applied at 15 mph or below — pulling into a parking space, creeping in traffic. The noise is strongly temperature-dependent: it appears in ambient temperatures under roughly 50°F and the front brakes typically go quiet once warmed up, which is why dealers who test-drive a hot car often cannot reproduce it. Acura acknowledged it in service bulletin 19-053 (Front and/or Rear Brakes Squeal When Applied at Low Speeds) covering 2019-2020 cars, and revised the bulletin repeatedly as the condition persisted into later model years, with a later revision extending it to 2022 and the bulletin still listed for 2023.

On the 2019-2021 Acura RDX, the third-generation RDX's panoramic glass roof is a documented noise and durability complaint. Acura issued service bulletin 21-003 (January 2021) for the 2019 RDX addressing rattling or clicking from the panoramic glass roof — a noise from the roof assembly over bumps and rough pavement. Separately, owners report the powered sunshade motor failing with the shade stuck in the open position, and dealers quoting removal of the entire panoramic roof assembly to reach it, with quotes reported around $4,000 out of warranty. Owner-survey data for 2019-2021 also records squeaks, rattles, weatherstrip and water-leak complaints concentrated on this roof.
