2010 BMW 7 Series Problems: 5 Known Issues

On the 2009-2015 BMW 7 Series, the N63 twin-turbo V8 places the turbos inside the vee, and the trapped heat cooks the plastic timing chain guides until they crack and break apart. Debris from a shattered guide lets the chain go slack, so it stretches, throws timing correlation codes, and can jump a tooth - at which point one whole bank stops firing and the driver gets a Drive Train Malfunction with reduced power. Owners on the F01 chassis have reported broken guides and a jumped chain around 100,000-120,000 miles, often preceded for months by a rattle or grinding noise during the first few seconds after a cold start. Early N63 engines in F01/F02 cars built through June 2012 were the worst and were covered by BMW's timing-chain check (SI B11 16 14), performed alongside the N63 Customer Care Package.

On the 2009-2015 BMW 7 Series, the N63 V8 engine uses high-pressure direct injection fuel pumps (HPFP) that commonly fail between 60,000-100,000 miles. The HPFP is driven by the engine camshaft and operates at extremely high pressures (2,900+ PSI). Internal wear and seal failures cause fuel pressure loss, leading to rough running, misfires, and no-start conditions. The N63 has two HPFPs (one per cylinder bank) that often fail together. Failed pumps can contaminate the fuel system with metal particles, requiring fuel system flush.

On the 2009-2022 BMW 7 Series, the 7 Series iDrive infotainment system experiences head unit failures across generations, with the CIC (Car Information Computer) in 2009-2012 F01/F02 models and the NBT (Next Big Thing) unit in 2013-2015 F01/F02 models being particularly problematic; G11/G12 models use NBT Evo and, from 2019 production, the MGU unit. Symptoms include screen blackouts, random reboots, navigation freezing, and loss of Bluetooth connectivity. The issues are often caused by failing hard drives (CIC) or eMMC storage degradation (NBT) within the head unit.

On the 2009-2015 BMW 7 Series, the N63's direct injectors sit in the hottest part of a hot-vee engine and fail early, either leaking down and washing the cylinder or losing flow entirely. The result is a persistent misfire isolated to one cylinder that follows the injector when you swap it to another bore - the diagnostic that separates an injector from a coil, plug, or HPFP problem. BMW went through several injector revisions and ran an index-level campaign, replacing early injectors with index 11 or higher on affected cars; checking the index number stamped on each injector is a standard step when diagnosing N63 misfires. Owners on BimmerFest report chasing a cylinder-specific misfire through coils, plugs and even swapped high-pressure fuel pumps before the injector proved to be the culprit.

On the 2002-2022 BMW 7 Series, bMW 7 Series models equipped with air suspension commonly experience compressor and air strut failures. The air suspension compressor runs frequently and wears out between 60,000-120,000 miles. Air struts develop leaks from deteriorating rubber airbags. Symptoms include suspension warning lights, sagging corners, and harsh ride quality. On E65/E66 and F01/F02 the self-levelling system uses rear air springs only, while G11/G12 have air springs on both axles; all rely on the compressor for proper operation. This affects E65/E66, F01/F02, and G11/G12 generations with air suspension option. Repair costs are extremely high due to specialized components.
