2014 Cadillac ELR Problems: 13 Known Issues

On the 2014 Cadillac ELR, gM PIC5920B documents a 2014 ELR no-charge path with DTC P0DAA involving high-voltage isolation and possible heater, contactor, coolant-fill or internal isolation conditions. It does not support presuming a failed coolant-level sensor or simply topping off coolant and clearing the code.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR 1.4L LUU range extender (Voltec PHEV), multiple ELR owners report a frightening intermittent failure in which the car loses ALL electrical power without warning while driving - sometimes preceded by a loud 'pop' - taking out power steering, power brake assist, lights, hazard flashers, gauges and even door locks, forcing the driver to wrestle the car to the shoulder. A defining (and maddening) trait is that the car frequently restarts normally after towing and leaves no diagnostic trouble codes, so dealers struggle to reproduce or diagnose it. Suspected sources include the 12V system/grounds, the high-voltage contactor/relay in the battery, or the battery energy control module, but root cause is often not confirmed.

On the 2014-2015 Cadillac ELR, gM PIC6015A and PIC6076 cover bounded ELR no-charge and Service High Voltage Charging System paths. A cord, charging station, pilot-signal fault, cracked or water-affected receptacle, or an applicable HPCM2 calibration can produce the concern; the bulletins do not establish universal onboard-charger failure.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR, the ELR's motorized charge port door frequently fails to open or close properly. The electric actuator motor that operates the charge port door jams or the pivot hinge corrodes, preventing the door from releasing. In cold weather the door can freeze shut. If the door won't open, the vehicle cannot be plugged in for charging. The charge port light ring may also fail to illuminate or show incorrect colors.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR, gM PIC6055B covers an 8-inch CUE integrated-center-stack display that bubbles or delaminates. The bulletin requires technicians to distinguish the condition from damage caused by cleaners or excessive force and does not establish a universal DIY digitizer repair or fixed replacement part number.

On the 2014-2015 Cadillac ELR, a low ELR 12-volt battery can leave control modules unable to wake and prevent a normal start. GM also issued VIN-gated program 14395A for a bounded 2015 OnStar-module battery-drain condition; that program expired in 2017 and is not proof of a universal drain.

On the 2014 Cadillac ELR, certain 2014 ELR vehicles without adaptive cruise control were built with software that can inhibit some electronic-stability-control diagnostics. An ESC fault may therefore disable or degrade the system without illuminating the required malfunction warning, increasing crash risk.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR 1.4L LUU, cadillac documents several normal reasons the ELR gasoline engine may start while battery charge remains, including low or high battery temperature, low high-voltage state of charge, an open hood and engine or fuel maintenance mode. That behavior alone does not establish battery imbalance or pack failure.

On the 2014 Cadillac ELR, gM bulletin 00-05-22-002N applies to 2014 and prior GM passenger cars and distinguishes cosmetic corrosion, lot rot, lateral runout, thickness variation and flaking. Applying it to the 2014 ELR is a scope inference; the bulletin does not establish regenerative braking as the cause of a recurring ELR defect.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR Voltec 1.4L range-extender plug-in hybrid, the ELR uses an electronic precision shift lever that springs back to a center rest position and relies on an internal park-detent microswitch to confirm the transmission is in Park. On the ELR this internal park switch degrades and intermittently fails to send the 'in Park' signal, producing a persistent 'Shift to Park' warning even though the lever is already in Park, which prevents the driver from powering the car down. The fault is intermittent (can occur several times a day, then disappear for a week), which is characteristic of a worn switch contact rather than a software glitch. When it occurs, the car may repeatedly chime and stay awake until it times out (owners report roughly 20 minutes), and repeated occurrences can contribute to 12V battery drain. Owners on the Cadillac and GM-Volt forums document the identical symptom, and the same GM electronic-shifter 'Shift to Park' condition became the subject of a nationwide class-action lawsuit.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac ELR 1.4L LUU, the ELR can start its gasoline engine during documented Engine Maintenance Mode or Fuel Maintenance Mode even when battery charge remains. These modes keep the engine operable and consume aging fuel; they are normal operating behaviors, not proof of a propulsion-battery fault.
