According to the recall record, the cracking is caused by rapid temperature transitions combined with the soldering process used to build the switch. Because the hazard switch sits in the same circuit as the turn signals on these cars, a cracked joint that opens the circuit takes both functions with it: a Malibu owner may find the turn signals and hazard lamps working one moment and flashing erratically or not at all the next. NHTSA's consequence statement is straightforward - a driver who cannot signal a turn cannot show other traffic what the car is about to do, and that can lead to a crash. The campaign as a whole covered 670,740 vehicles across several GM passenger car lines; that figure is the total for the entire recall, not a count of Malibus.

On the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Malibu, a common failure on early-2000s Malibu models is the Passlock security system falsely detecting a theft condition, which can disable fuel delivery and prevent the engine from starting. Owners report the SECURITY light flashing, long wait times before restart, and in some cases intermittent stalling or crank-no-start behavior. The root cause is typically failure in the ignition lock cylinder sensor/housing or related wiring causing incorrect resistance/voltage readings to the body control module.

On the 2000-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, the multifunction hazard switch on 2000-2003 Malibu models is a well-known failure point that can cause intermittent or inoperative turn signals and, in some cases, affect brake lamp operation. The switch's internal solder joints crack or its contacts wear, leading to erratic flashing, no turn signal output, or lamps that work only when the hazard button is pressed a certain way. If the ignition leaves 'Run' while moving, the engine shuts off, power steering assist and power brake vacuum boost are lost, and — critically — the airbags are disabled and will not deploy in the ensuing crash. GM acknowledged deaths, injuries and crashes in vehicles covered by this campaign. This is not the Passlock anti-theft no-start condition, which is a separate, non-safety fault on the same platform.
