2023 Kia Sportage Problems: 6 Known Issues

On the 2023 Kia Sportage, kia America recalled certain 2023 Kia Sportage vehicles because the electronic controller for the Idle Stop & Go (ISG) electric oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components. Those damaged components can allow the oil pump to overheat. On a Sportage equipped with Idle Stop & Go, the electric oil pump keeps transmission oil pressure up while the engine is automatically shut off at a stop, so the controller is energized during ordinary stop-and-go driving. NHTSA lists the campaign as covering 39,765 vehicles in total across every model included in the recall (Soul, Sportage and Seltos combined); that figure is campaign-wide and is not a count of Sportages. The defect is filed under power train / automatic transmission fluid pump. Until the repair is done, Kia advised owners to park the vehicle outside and away from structures.

On the 2023-2025 Kia Sportage, nQ5 Sportage fitted with the Genuine Kia tow hitch harness accessory and the 4.2-inch instrument panel screen can suffer a software fault in the tow hitch harness control module that causes the cluster screen to fail to display critical information - speed, warning telltales and gear position can go blank or fail to populate. Roughly 5,046 vehicles are covered, spanning 2023-2025 Sportage PHEV and 2024-2025 Sportage. This is a display/communication defect and is distinct from the earlier tow hitch harness overheating fire recall on Kia vehicles - same accessory family, different failure mode, different remedy.

On the 2020-2025 Kia Sportage, the infotainment head unit in 2020+ Sportages enters a continuous reboot loop or freezes on the splash screen, leaving the driver without navigation, backup camera, and climate controls (on models with touchscreen-only HVAC). The issue is caused by software bugs and insufficient system memory for the connected services. Firmware updates from Kia have improved but not fully resolved the issue. The problem often occurs after USB device connection or Bluetooth pairing.

On the 2023-2024 Kia Sportage, kia recalled certain 2023-2024 Sportage SUVs because the molding along the roof may loosen and come off the vehicle. On a Sportage this is the trim strip that runs front-to-back along the roof edge above the side windows, so a loosening piece is something an owner may spot from outside the vehicle or hear at highway speed before it separates. NHTSA's concern is what happens after it lets go: a roof molding that detaches in traffic becomes a road hazard for vehicles behind, raising the risk of a crash. The Sportage shares this campaign with the Kia Carnival; the 101,049 units affected is the campaign-wide total across both models, not a Sportage-specific count. Kia's internal number for the campaign is SC292.

On the 2017-2025 Kia Sportage, the panoramic sunroof glass on 2017+ Sportages can crack or shatter spontaneously without any impact. The tempered glass panel develops stress fractures from thermal expansion/contraction, especially during rapid temperature changes (hot sun then cold rain, or cold night then morning defrost). When the glass fails, it shatters into small pieces that fall into the cabin. Multiple NHTSA complaints have been filed for this issue.

On the 2023-2024 Kia Sportage 2.5L Smartstream G4KN naturally aspirated, a batch of fuel injectors on the 2.5L Smartstream naturally-aspirated four in the 2023-2024 NQ5 Sportage leaks fuel into the cylinder when the injector should be closed. The over-rich charge upsets the air/fuel ratio and the engine hesitates, stumbles, loses power under acceleration or shuts off outright - including at stoplights and, in owner reports, at highway speed. Long-crank and hard hot-restart are common precursors because the leaking injector floods the cylinder after shutdown. This is a fuel-delivery defect on the Smartstream 2.5, not the Theta II rod-bearing story from the previous generation, and the two must not be conflated: different block, different failure, different remedy.
