On the 2019-2022 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, on 2019-2022 Outlander Sport models with a CVT and a keyed (mechanical) ignition, a programming error in the CVT-ECU can misread a brief (0.1 second or longer) loss of the ignition power supply signal and command an erroneous gear ratio. At speeds above 62 mph this causes the engine to over-rev, which can drive a piston into an exhaust valve, permanently damaging the engine and causing it to stall while driving. Mitsubishi reported 31 engines needed replacement before the recall.
