P2002 on GMC

The 2016+ Canyon Duramax 2.8L LWN diesel uses DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) injection and a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) as part of its SCR emissions system. Owners frequently report DEF quality/level sensor faults, DPF regeneration failures in stop-and-go use, DEF pump failures, and NOx sensor faults. Trucks used primarily for short trips often cannot complete DPF regeneration cycles, leading to DPF plugging and the truck going into reduced power mode. GM issued multiple TSBs on DEF sensor calibration and DPF regen procedures.

The 2007.5-2010 6.6L Duramax RPO LMM was GM's first Duramax with a diesel particulate filter, and the early calibration regenerates far too often. Owners on duramaxforum.com and dieselplace.com report the truck entering regen every 100-200 miles, and in trucks used for short trips, heavy idling or slow towing the regen cycle is repeatedly interrupted before completion. Soot then accumulates faster than it burns off, the differential pressure across the filter climbs, and the truck eventually refuses to self-regen at all and derates. The excess fuel injected late in the cycle for regeneration also washes down the cylinder walls and dilutes engine oil. This is an LMM-specific pattern; the pre-2007.5 LBZ has no DPF, and the LML added SCR/DEF which changed the regen strategy.

The Duramax diesel DPF becomes clogged with soot under low-speed, short-trip, or heavy towing duty cycles that prevent complete passive regeneration. Owners report the truck entering limp mode, reduced power, and repeated active regen cycles that fail to fully clean the filter.
