P2112: How to Diagnose & Fix — Throttle Actuator Control System - Stuck Closed

The Ford Freestyle is subject to a significant safety issue where the vehicle surges or lunges forward unexpectedly at low speeds when in gear, even without the accelerator pedal being applied. NHTSA's preliminary evaluation PE11-018 counted about 4,010 complaints (1,945 to NHTSA), finding that throttle body deposits from normal PCV operation, not adequately compensated for by the original PCM idle calibration, cause idle speed flares, particularly when engine load changes from A/C compressor cycling or power steering use. About 178 low-speed minor impacts were reported. On November 29, 2012, Ford launched Customer Satisfaction Program 12N03 (a warranty extension, not a safety recall) to clean the throttle body and reprogram the PCM with an updated idle speed control strategy, and reimburse owners who had already paid for the repair.

Owners report sudden reduced power, poor throttle response, and limp-home behavior due to electronic throttle body contamination/wear or throttle actuator control faults. The issue can be intermittent and may clear after a key cycle, then recur, which is a common pattern in NHTSA complaints and owner reports. It often sets throttle/ETC-related DTCs and can be triggered by carbon buildup or failing throttle position sensing.

Owners report sudden loss of power with a wrench light and reduced throttle response, often while cruising or accelerating. NHTSA complaints and Ford service information describe electronic throttle body internal faults (TPS/actuator) that can trigger ETC failsafe and limp mode on 3.7L Ti-VCT Transits. The condition may be intermittent at first and then become frequent, especially with heat/soak and higher mileage.

The electronic throttle body on the 3.5L Cyclone V6 uses a plastic-geared motor and integrated throttle position sensors. Contamination, gear wear and sensor drift cause the PCM to lose confidence in commanded vs. actual plate position, triggering Failure Mode Effects Management (FMEM) limp mode. The vehicle drops to a fixed low-power limp mode with the wrench light on, often at highway speed, which is why owners describe it as a safety issue rather than a driveability annoyance. Ford acknowledged the pattern with Customer Satisfaction Program 16B32 (2016 Flex built September 22, 2015 through April 14, 2016) and a TSB covering 2015-2016 3.5L vehicles built on or before 31 May 2016. The failure is frequently intermittent at first: the wrench light appears, the vehicle is restarted, and normal power returns until the next episode.

The electronic throttle body suffers internal contamination/wear of the motor contacts, causing intermittent electrical failure rather than simple dirt buildup. The result is a sudden loss of power (limp/failsafe mode) with the amber wrench (powertrain) warning light, rough idle, or stalling, sometimes in traffic. Ford acknowledged the problem with extended-warranty program 13N03 for 2010-2013 models and Customer Satisfaction Program 16B32 for certain 2015-2016 vehicles including Fusion.
