2012 Hyundai Veloster Problems: 9 Known Issues

On the 2012-2017 Hyundai Veloster 1.6L Gamma GDI (G4FD), the 6-speed dry DCT offered with the non-turbo 1.6 GDI Veloster is prone to premature clutch wear and failure, often before 60,000 miles. Symptoms include slipping, shuddering, and complete loss of drive. The dry clutch design generates excessive heat in stop-and-go traffic. Hyundai addressed DCT drivability with TCM software updates (e.g., TSB 14-AT-011 on 2012 cars); no DCT-specific warranty extension was found.

On the 2012-2021 Hyundai Veloster, manual-transmission Velosters of both generations use a hydraulic clutch whose master-cylinder seals (and less often the concentric slave cylinder) begin bypassing fluid, usually between 60,000 and 100,000 miles on first-gen cars and as early as 35,000 miles on some 2019+ Turbo manuals. The pedal sinks to the floor or fails to return, the car will not go into first or reverse at a stop (worst after sitting overnight), and gears grind on engagement. Owners on veloster.org report dealers replacing the master cylinder first and the fault returning within weeks because the slave cylinder was the actual leak, and one 2013 Turbo owner had the symptom recur two months after a master replacement.

On the 2012-2015 Hyundai Veloster, every 2012-2015 Veloster (116,911 cars built July 2, 2011 - Oct 31, 2014) is included in Hyundai's 1.64-million-vehicle ABS recall. The ABS motor-shaft O-ring formulation can degrade over time, especially with moisture or contaminants in old brake fluid, allowing brake fluid to seep onto the ABS controller circuit board. The resulting short draws enough current to start a fire in the module, parked or driving. Hyundai advised owners to park outside and away from structures until repaired; the supplier changed the O-ring material in September 2014 (Korea) and February 2015 (US), which is why the 2016-2017 cars are excluded.

On the 2012-2017 Hyundai Veloster, the first-generation Veloster's rear calipers carry an integral cable-actuated parking brake lever whose pivot corrodes when water and road grime get past the seal. The lever then sticks, so the parking brake either drags while driving (hot rear wheel, burning smell, premature pad and rotor wear) or fails to fully release or fully engage. Hyundai recalled 2012 manual-transmission cars built July 2, 2011 - Feb 27, 2012 under NHTSA 12V-567 because a partially engaged park brake on a manual car can let it roll away. Owners on veloster.org have reported the same seized-rear-caliper behavior across later first-gen years outside the recall population, and the failure mode continued on the N (see separate entry).

On the 2012-2017 Hyundai Veloster 1.6L Gamma GDI (G4FD), certain 2015–2016 Velosters with Gamma 1.6L GDI engines are included in Hyundai Recall 198 / NHTSA 20V746 for possible premature connecting-rod-bearing wear. The recall calls for inspection, engine replacement when bearing damage is found, and KSDS monitoring software. Separately, Campaign 966 documentation includes certain 2012–2017 Gamma GDI Velosters. Sharing the Gamma name does not prove that a turbo variant or any individual VIN is eligible. A warning or P1326 requires diagnosis, not an automatic replacement decision.

On the 2012-2014 Hyundai Veloster, on 2012-2014 Velosters equipped with rear parking sensors, the reverse park aid sensor (RPAS) printed circuit board was insufficiently sealed. Water or other conductive liquid entering the sensor housing shorts the board; the short can overheat the sensor and wiring in the rear bumper and has caused at least five fires reported to Hyundai, with the vehicle parked or driving. Hyundai recalled 26,169 2012-2013 cars under NHTSA 23V-132 (Hyundai Recall 242) in February 2023, then amended the population in April 2023 to 25,715 cars built through October 31, 2013, including some 2014 models. Later Velosters used a revised sensor and are not included.

On the 2012 Hyundai Veloster, nHTSA recalls 12V-568 and 13V-051 together cover certain model-year 2012 Hyundai Veloster vehicles equipped with panoramic sunroofs and produced from July 4, 2011 through April 17, 2012. The panoramic sunroof assembly may have been weakened during installation at the factory. If weakened, the panoramic glass panel may break while the vehicle is in motion, creating a risk of personal injury or a crash.

On the 2012-2017 Hyundai Veloster, the Veloster's unique asymmetric door layout features a single door on the driver side and two doors on the passenger side. The hidden third door (rear passenger) hinge and check mechanism wears prematurely, causing the door to sag, not latch properly, or swing open uncontrollably. This is a unique-to-Veloster design issue.

On the 2012-2017 Hyundai Veloster, first-generation 1.6 T-GDI Velosters have two well-documented low-fuel-pressure failures that present identically. On 2013-2014 Turbos an internal restriction in the low-pressure fuel feed tube from the tank starves the high-pressure pump under load, setting P0087 (fuel rail/system pressure too low) and causing hesitation, misfire and stalling; Hyundai addressed it with Service Campaign 937 / TSB 15-01-023 (fuel tube inspection/replacement), which owners on velosterturbo.org documented having done at the dealer. Separately, the camshaft-driven high-pressure fuel pump itself wears and loses output (one owner measured 300 psi at idle against a 500 psi spec), producing the same P0087 with rough idle and stalling on both turbo and base 1.6 cars.
