2017 Mazda CX-3 Problems: 11 Known Issues

On the 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 1.5L SkyActiv-D S5-DPTS, europe/Australia/Japan market CX-3s with the 1.5 SkyActiv-D (S5-DPTS) diesel suffer chronically frequent DPF regeneration. Because Mazda regenerates by injecting extra fuel on the exhaust stroke, unburnt diesel washes past the rings into the sump - the oil level climbs above full and the dipstick carries an 'X' mark specifically to flag excessive dilution. Short-trip use makes it worse because regens abort before completion, so soot builds faster and the cycle tightens. P2459 (DPF regeneration frequency) is the code the ECM sets when it sees the filter loading much faster than expected. Left alone this destroys bearings through diluted oil and shortens DPF life. Leaking or out-of-spec fuel injectors are the most commonly found root cause; glow plug and EGR faults also drive it. This is a diesel-only failure and does not apply to the 2.0L Skyactiv-G petrol cars sold in North America.

White powdery aluminium oxide forms under the clear coat, usually starting at the rim lip and around the lug seats, then lifts the finish in flakes. The mount edge chafes the paint, moisture gets under the film, and rust blooms outward in a ring around the camera and the switch. Mazda acknowledged this in Technical Service Bulletin 09-002/17 (later 09-004/20, 'Rust Around Rear View Camera and/or Liftgate Opener Switch'), which covers 2016-2017 CX-3s produced before Jan. 23, 2017 and adds a protector pad so the camera and switch mount bases no longer touch the paint. It is cosmetic at first but perforates the liftgate skin if left, and it is one of the most consistently reported CX-3 body complaints on owner forums.

On the 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 2.0 Skyactiv-G, the 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3 with the 2.0L Skyactiv-G direct injection engine develops carbon deposits on the intake valves over time. Because direct injection sprays fuel directly into the combustion chamber rather than over the intake valves, there is no fuel wash to clean the valve backsides. Oil vapors from the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system coat the intake valves and bake into hard carbon deposits. This gradually restricts airflow, causing misfires on cold starts, loss of low-end power, and reduced fuel efficiency. Using conventional oils with high volatility worsens the problem by producing more PCV vapors.

On the 2016-2021 Mazda CX-3, cX-3 rear brakes produce excessive grinding, squealing, and scraping noises, often well before pads reach minimum thickness.
