After the car sits, oil drains from the front timing covers to the sump, leaving the secondary chain tensioners momentarily without pressure on startup. The result is chain/adjuster rattle for 1-3 seconds at first fire. Underlying contributors can include failed chain tensioners, worn camshaft adjusters, a stretched timing chain and/or worn guide rails. If ignored, severe cases risk chain/guide damage. Mercedes addressed this in TSB LI05.10-P-056435 by adding oil check valves to the tensioner oil-supply passages.

Water then runs down inside the rear quarter and tailgate area directly onto the rear Signal Acquisition Module (SAM), the rear fuse box, the power lift-gate control module and the lift-gate hydraulic pump. Once soaked, these modules corrode and fail, producing a cascade of electrical faults. Mercedes issued a recall for MY2009 vehicles (thicker tail-lamp seal + relocated lift-gate control unit), but many earlier and unrepaired cars still suffer. Critically, replacing a water-damaged SAM without first fixing the leak will simply destroy the new module.

In the worst case the transmission locks into a single gear (typically 2nd) and enters limp mode. This is one of the most widely reported 7G-Tronic faults across the W164/W166 M-Class. Repair is plug-and-play once codes are cleared with a STAR/equivalent scanner.
