2022 Volkswagen Taos Problems: 18 Known Issues

On the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 1.5L EA211 TSI (DNKA), 4Motion (AWD) 2022 Taos models carry an engine control unit software version that, under specific conditions (high ambient temperature, high engine load, A/C running), can command the engine to shut off as the vehicle decelerates to a stop at 20 mph or less. When the engine stalls the driver loses power steering assist and other systems, raising low-speed crash risk. Roughly 5,092 AWD units built March 4 to July 30, 2021 were affected; the suspect ECUs carry part numbers 05E.906.013.C and 05E.906.013.F. The engine can be manually restarted immediately, but the unexpected shutdown is the hazard. This is a control-software stall distinct from the 23V214 fuel-delivery-module power-loss recall and from DSG hesitation.

On the 2022-2023 Volkswagen Taos, the original-design head gasket on the 1.5T EA211 evo (engine code DNKA) used in 2022-2023 Taos and Jetta leaks coolant externally, typically at the rear of the engine where the head meets the block. Owners report gradual coolant loss, low-coolant warnings, coolant smell and visible seepage/crust at the back of the block, sometimes under 20,000 miles. Volkswagen acknowledged it in Technical Service Bulletin 15-23-01 (Head Gasket Leakage) covering MY22-MY23 1.5T Jetta and Taos, and changed the gasket design and coating in production as of engine number DNKA 234 458 (July 27, 2023). This is a distinct failure from the plastic water-pump/thermostat-housing seepage that also affects this engine - here the leak path is the head-to-block joint itself, and it requires the head to come off.

On the 2022-2025 Volkswagen Taos, the 1.5 TSI in the Taos holds roughly 4.5-4.6 quarts, an awkward capacity that sits just under a standard 5-quart jug. Quick-lube shops and even dealers routinely dump the whole jug in, which puts the level above the electronic oil level sensor's upper threshold and triggers an amber triangle with "Please reduce oil level" on the center display. Check Engine and/or EPC lights may illuminate, and sudden power loss can create a crash risk. This recall condition does not itself cause a fuel leak. Confirm eligibility by VIN.

On the 2022 Volkswagen Taos EA211 1.5T, approximately 16,737 model-year 2022 Taos SUVs were recalled because the underhood fuel-supply quick-connector may detach from the fuel supply line. If the connection separates, fuel can leak into the engine compartment, which can starve the engine and cause a stall (crash risk) and, in the presence of an ignition source, create a fire hazard. This is separate from the in-tank fuel pump recall and addresses the quick connector on the fuel supply line (a connector/line tolerance mismatch).

VW recalled 10,119 U.S. vehicles; the defect was originally discovered in an August 2021 laboratory dynamic test, with roughly 1,242 suspect castings identified. This is a structural/chassis failure separate from the brake, DSG, engine, fuel and infotainment issues.
