2008 Toyota Highlander Problems: 19 Known Issues

On the 2008 Toyota Highlander 3.5L V6 (2GR-FE), on 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 engines (built up through roughly April 2008), the rubber center section of the oil supply hose that feeds the VVT-i actuator degrades from exposure to corrosive PCV gases. A pinhole forms and expands, then the hose bursts, dumping engine oil rapidly. Owners report a sudden loss of oil pressure — sometimes total oil loss within minutes — with severe engine damage if the driver keeps going. Toyota addressed it with Limited Service Campaign 90K (a goodwill campaign, not a safety recall). Notably, the first revised rubber replacement hose was also failure-prone; the durable fix is the all-metal line.

When the internal separator corrodes/cracks, engine coolant and transmission fluid mix, producing a pink 'strawberry milkshake' emulsion. It is exhaust resonance transmitted structurally, not through the air: Toyota bolted an exhaust support bracket rigidly to the engine/transmission with no flex joint at that point, so pipe resonance couples directly into the body.
