2018 Volvo V60 Problems: 6 Known Issues

On the 2014-2018 Volvo V60, the 2.0L VEA diesel (D4204T family) has a design weakness in the EGR system: the original EGR cooler develops internal sealing problems that let small amounts of coolant seep in and mix with exhaust soot, forming a hard, paste-like carbon sludge that clogs both the cooler and the EGR valve. This trips a P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) code, causes hesitation and rough running, and frequently drops the car into reduced-power 'limp/turtle' mode. It typically appears around 40,000-75,000 miles and is worse on cars used for frequent short trips that never fully warm up.

On the 2011-2018 Volvo V60, diesel V60s used mainly for short, low-speed trips cannot reach the exhaust temperatures needed for the diesel particulate filter to passively regenerate, so soot accumulates and the DPF clogs. This brings on reduced power, poor fuel economy, a DPF/emissions warning light, and eventually limp mode and blocked-filter messages. Note: the diesel D4 was not sold in the US market.

On the 2011-2018 Volvo V60, the HVAC blower motor resistor (also called the 'final stage unit' or 'power stage') on first-generation V60s controls fan speed. When it fails, the blower gets stuck at one speed — usually full blast — and cannot be adjusted by the climate knob. As the splines wear, owners hear a whine, droning or growl from the front floor area that changes with throttle/speed; pulling the Haldex fuse can quieten it, helping confirm the diagnosis. Separately, the angle gear input/output seals leak: because the unit holds under 1L of gear oil, even a small leak can starve it of lubricant and cause catastrophic internal damage.
