2014 Cadillac XTS Problems: 24 Known Issues

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, the front passenger seat contains a Passenger Presence System (occupant-classification sensor/module and wiring harness) that tells the airbag controller whether to enable the passenger airbag. On the XTS the sensor mat, the under-seat connector, and the wiring harness are prone to faults, illuminating the SRS/'Service Air Bag' warning and often leaving the PASSENGER AIRBAG OFF indicator stuck on (or incorrectly on with an adult seated). Because a fault can disable passenger airbag deployment, this is a genuine safety concern.

On the 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS, certain 2013-2014 XTS built between April 11, 2013 and June 27, 2013 (and 2014 Chevrolet Impalas) may have left the plant with the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) still set to 'manufacturing mode'. In that mode the SDM does not command airbag deployment in a crash, so the frontal and side airbags and pretensioners would not fire. There is no warning light for this condition. GM's number for the campaign is 14532; the recall was announced in August 2014 and began in September 2014.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, the Safety Alert Seat uses haptic (vibration) motors in the left and right seat bolsters to pulse warnings for lane departure, blind spot, and forward collision. One side commonly stops vibrating (left or right only), or the system randomly switches between vibrate and chime. The documented weak point is a wire breaking where it enters the haptic motor assembly. Because GM ties this hardware into the driver-assist suite, a failed seat motor frequently also triggers a 'Service Driver Assist System' message.

On the 2013-2015 Cadillac XTS, gM recall 14471 covers certain 2013-2015 XTS vehicles. The electronic parking-brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract, leaving the rear pads partially engaged without reliably illuminating the parking-brake indicator. This can cause poor acceleration, unwanted deceleration, excessive heat, smoke or sparks.

On the 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS, gM safety recall 14062 covers 2013 and some 2014 XTS vehicles. A displaced cavity plug can let water enter and corrode the brake-booster pump relay connector; a resistive short can melt the connector and increase fire risk.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, xTS models equipped with the optional rear air-leveling suspension (RPO F38) suffer sudden, total collapse of the rear air springs/struts, often without warning and sometimes at highway speed. NHTSA/CarComplaints reports describe the rear dropping so low the tires nearly contact the wheel wells, causing the rear end to bounce and loss of vehicle control. Root causes include failed rear air springs (perforation/dry-rot), a worn-out air dryer/desiccant that lets moisture accumulate, and air compressor/air-line failures. A 'Service Leveling System' message and the car sitting low or unlevel are the early warning signs. The 2013 model year alone shows ~24 logged suspension complaints, the highest-volume XTS problem after CUE.

On the 2013-2015 Cadillac XTS, gM PI1285 covers 2013-2015 XTS rear shocks when light oil seepage or a clunk over bumps is reported. A light oil film is not proof of failure; GM directs checking for a substantial leak and inspecting whether the upper mount shifted because its bolts or suspension-control software need correction.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, on XTS trims equipped with Magnetic Ride Control (Premium, Platinum and Vsport), the magnetorheological front struts develop fluid leaks and/or internal faults, typically between roughly 50,000 and 100,000 miles. The driver information center shows 'Service Suspension System', the ride goes harsh or floaty, and inspection finds fluid on the strut body. Because the struts are electronically controlled, they cannot be swapped for a standard strut without either a conversion kit or persistent fault codes, and OEM MRC struts have been intermittently backordered. Owners report dealer quotes of roughly $650 for one rear shock, $2,000-$3,000 for a pair of front struts, and about $4,000 for all four corners on a 56,000-mile 2015. This is distinct from the already-documented rear shock seepage and rear air-spring collapse: it is the front MRC damper itself failing.

On the 2014 Cadillac XTS, in July 2014 GM recalled a small population of 2014 XTS (with 2014 Buick Regal, Chevrolet Camaro and Impala) because the bolts fastening the steering intermediate shaft to the steering gear and the lower ball joint to the lower control arm may not have been torqued to specification at the factory. An under-torqued fastener can back out and allow the intermediate shaft or the ball joint to separate, causing a loss of steering control. GM's internal number is 14378. Only about 100 XTS and Regal units were involved, so most cars are unaffected, but on an affected VIN the consequence is severe.

On the 2014-2016 Cadillac XTS, gM PI1294B covers 2014-2016 XTS vehicles with belt-drive electronic power steering RPO NJ2 when a Service Power Steering message appears intermittently after a cold start and C056D 3C, C0475 00 or U0131 is current or stored.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, the engine-mounted high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) on the GM 3.6L direct-injection V6 is a known wear item that fails on the XTS, causing long crank/no-start (especially warm restart), rough idle, stalling and misfires. The most common codes are P0087 (fuel rail pressure too low), P0089 (fuel pressure regulator performance) and P0191 (rail pressure sensor), often with random misfire P0300. Because the high-pressure pump is cam-driven off the engine, a failing pump can drive adaptive fuel trims that mask early symptoms until it strands the car.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS 3.6L V6 LFX/LGX, the 3.6L V6 water pump develops an internal seal failure that lets coolant seep from the pump's weep hole — a designed indicator that the pump's internal shaft seal has failed. Owners commonly mistake the weep-hole drip for a 'pinhole' and try stop-leak, but it signals the pump is failing internally and will progress to overheating and potential head-gasket/engine damage. Low-coolant warnings, sweet smell, and white residue at the front of the engine are typical. RepairPal lists coolant leaks (pump, hoses, radiator) among the most common XTS cooling complaints.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, xTS owners frequently report the 12V battery going dead overnight or after a few days of sitting, caused by a control module failing to enter sleep mode and continuing to draw current with the ignition off. Common culprits on this platform include the radio/CUE (infotainment) module and the BCM. Repeated deep discharges then prematurely kill the battery and can trigger low-state-of-charge warnings and start-stop faults. On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, the 2013-2019 XTS has the same CUE touchscreen delamination issue as all Cadillac CUE-equipped vehicles. The capacitive touchscreen develops bubbles, becomes unresponsive, or cracks from internal adhesive failure. The XTS was commonly used as a livery/fleet vehicle, and the CUE screen failure is widespread in the fleet community.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, xTS owners across 2013-2018 report an intermittent 'No Remote Detected' message when pressing the start button, sometimes with delayed lock/unlock response, even with fresh fob batteries and while the same fob still locks and unlocks the doors. When a battery change (CR2032, positive side down) does not resolve it, the documented causes are the remote control door lock receiver (keyless entry module), the passive-entry low-frequency antennas in the console or rear compartment, or the immobilizer antenna coil around the start button. Dealers have replaced the keyless entry module and the remote antenna to cure it; the companion GM bulletin 16-NA-396 for the receiver on related Cadillacs points to the same component family.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, xTS HID/Xenon headlamps suffer ballast (HID control unit) failures and headlight-housing condensation that cause intermittent or total loss of a low beam. Owners report flickering, a headlamp that cuts out then comes back, or a dead side after a new bulb. Moisture entering the housing is a frequent root cause — water reaching the ballast causes rapid failure — and corrosion in the headlight wiring/ground (often shared with the upper LED DRL) can take out both the ballast and DRL together.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, the 3.6L V6 (LFX naturally-aspirated and LF3 twin-turbo) uses direct fuel injection, so no fuel washes over the backs of the intake valves. Combined with a PCV system that routes oil vapor into the intake tract, carbon coking accumulates on the intake valves over time. By roughly 60,000-100,000 miles this can cause rough idle, misfires, hesitation, and reduced fuel economy/power. This is separate from timing-chain-stretch and high-pressure fuel-pump issues; it is a fueling/airflow deposit problem inherent to GDI engines.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, gM PIP3423P covers 2013-2019 XTS vehicles with the 3.6L LFX or LF3 engine when two or more of P0008, P0009 and P0016-P0019 are present. GM directs technicians to check for loose chains or tensioners and, if normal SI diagnosis does not find the cause, inspect whether the crankshaft-sensor reluctor moved. The bulletin does not establish automatic chain replacement.

On the 2013-2018 Cadillac XTS, the XTS dual-panel sunroof is prone to water intrusion that stains the cloth headliner and wets the front/rear passenger footwells. The design uses the same perimeter seal on the fixed glass as the moving panel (doubling leak-off) with undersized drain tubes that clog easily with debris, overwhelming the system in heavy rain. The problem became significant enough that Cadillac faced a class-action lawsuit over leaking sunroofs across several models. Water can also reach electrical modules under the carpet, causing secondary electrical faults.

On the 2014-2019 Cadillac XTS, gM bulletin 18-NA-358 covers 2014-2019 XTS vehicles with 6T70, 6T75 or 6T80 transmissions RPO M7U, M7W, M7V or MHM when severe launch or fourth-gear shudder, a 2-3 upshift or 3-2 downshift concern, flare, slip or harsh shift is present. Debris or scoring in the upper or lower valve body may be involved, but GM first requires ruling out engine driveability and torque-converter clutch shudder.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, all-wheel-drive XTS4 models use an electronically controlled rear drive module with an internal clutch pack, pump and controller (the rear differential clutch module). Owners report 'Service AWD System', 'Service Rear Axle' or 'Check Axle' warnings, sometimes as early as 11,000-30,000 miles, with the dealer replacing the differential clutch pump, the clutch module, or the entire rear differential. A second pattern is repeated rear differential seal leaks; one 2015 XTS4 owner had a seal at 24,000 miles, a differential replacement at 30,000, and another seal at 60,000, after which Cadillac extended that car's rear differential coverage to 138,000 miles. Parts availability has been a documented problem: the module was discontinued by the supplier for a period and owners waited months for new-old-stock or used units.

On the 2013-2017 Cadillac XTS 3.6L LFX V6, on 2013-2017 XTS with the 3.6L LFX V6, the weld at the catalytic converter mounting flange cracks, producing an exhaust leak at the front of the engine. Owners first notice a ticking or hissing that sounds like an intake or valvetrain noise on cold start, followed by an exhaust smell inside the cabin and eventually P0420/P0430 catalyst-efficiency codes as the leak upsets the downstream oxygen sensor reading. GM documented the condition first in preliminary information PIP5419 and then in TSB 17-NA-321 (November 2017), which calls for converter replacement rather than weld repair. The bank 2 (front) converter is the usual failure point.

On the 2013-2019 Cadillac XTS, two related HVAC complaints are common on the XTS: a repetitive clicking/knocking from behind the dash caused by a failing blend-door (temperature) actuator that can't reach its calibration stop, and loss of fan-speed control or no heat from a failed blower motor resistor/module — when the resistor fails the fan often works only on the highest setting. Owners report inconsistent temperature (one side hot/one cold) with the actuator fault and a dead or single-speed blower with the resistor fault.

On the 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS, the XTS uses an electric glove box release rather than a mechanical handle. On 2013 and early 2014 cars the actuator either does nothing when the button is pressed, releases only one side of the latch so the door hangs up, or opens on its own. GM's bulletin PI0778A (November 2014, covering 2013-2014 XTS built before February 1, 2014) attributes it to glove box misalignment, interference with the side ribs of the box, and cam/cable adjustment, which overload the actuator until its plastic gears strip. Forum members and dealers report filing a small amount off the latch edge as a stop-gap, pressing the extreme upper-right corner of the button, and eventually replacing the actuator. A separate GM service update extended the actuator delay in software so the latch has more time to release.
