2018 Ford Edge Problems: 10 Known Issues

On the 2015-2018 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost, the 2.0L EcoBoost engine in 2015-2018 Ford Edge is notorious for internal coolant leaks where antifreeze bypasses the head gasket and floods the combustion chambers. Ford's open-deck block design with scored channels between cylinders creates an inadequate sealing surface that degrades over time. Ford acknowledged this in TSB 19-2208 (superseded by TSB 19-2346, later TSB 22-2229) and the prescribed fix is complete engine long block replacement costing $7,700-$10,000+. Ford never issued a recall, relying instead on TSBs and limited extended warranty coverage. 2019 and later Edges are not included in these coolant-intrusion TSBs. On the 2015-2024 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost I4 (Twin-Scroll), the 2019 and later 2.0L EcoBoost uses an electronic wastegate actuator on the turbocharger (2015-2018 Edges use a vacuum-operated wastegate). Two related failures show up repeatedly: the actuator rod's retaining e-clip goes missing or the linkage works loose, producing a metallic rattle from the turbo area at idle and light throttle; and the electronic actuator itself fails or sticks, so the PCM cannot hold commanded boost and sets an underboost or actuator-performance code with a noticeable flat spot under acceleration. On 2019-2021 Edges the wastegate actuator fault often surfaces as P1464, a code whose description misleads shops toward the A/C system. Left alone, a flapping wastegate flap wears its bushings and eventually requires the whole turbo.

On the 2015-2024 Ford Edge 2.7L EcoBoost V6 (Nano), edge Sport and Edge ST owners with the 2.7L EcoBoost report a distinct 2-3 second metallic rattle on start-up after the vehicle has sat overnight. Oil bleeds out of the variable cam timing phasers while parked; on start-up there is no oil pressure to hold the phaser locking pins, so the phaser internals and the chain tensioners knock until pressure builds. Worn locking pins or their receptacles make the noise progressively longer and louder. Some low-mileage cars have needed chains, guides and phasers outright, with owners in these threads tying early failures to extended intervals and thin bulk oil at dealer services. Unlike the 3.5L Duratec chain stretch issue, this is the boosted 2.7 Nano V6's own phaser/tensioner behavior, and some owners in these threads characterize a brief start-up rattle as normal while lengthening rattle indicates real wear.

On the 2007-2018 Ford Edge, the Power Transfer Unit (PTU) on AWD Ford Edge models is known for chronic fluid leaks from the axle shaft seals and PTU cover seal. The PTU (transfer case equivalent) lacks a drain plug and Ford originally specified "lifetime fill" fluid, leading many owners to never service it. When the seal leaks and fluid level drops, the PTU runs dry and destroys itself. Ford issued TSB 09-25-7 for 2007-2010 models, and the issue persists through 2018 with TSB 18-2255 for later versions. Seal failure typically occurs between 60,000-100,000 miles and is common in AWD models. A destroyed PTU can also damage the rear axle and differential.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Edge 2.0L EcoBoost, the Ford 6F35 six-speed automatic transmission used with the 2.0L EcoBoost in 2012-2018 Edge models develops harsh shifting, particularly during the 2-3 and 3-4 upshifts. The transmission may also exhibit a shudder or vibration during light acceleration between 35-50 mph, caused by degraded torque converter clutch friction material contaminating the fluid. Ford released multiple TSBs addressing shift quality concerns, but many owners report the issue returns after fluid changes.

On the 2015-2018 Ford Edge, the flexible front brake jounce hoses on CD4 Edges rupture prematurely. Ford's Part 573 report traces it to localized failure of the hose's internal reinforcement braid from cyclic tensile, bending and torsional loading as the suspension and steering articulate. When the braid lets go the hose splits and brake fluid leaks progressively, so the driver gets increasing pedal travel and a reduced rate of deceleration - the pedal keeps going down and the vehicle takes noticeably longer to stop. Ford recalled 488,594 vehicles in the US for this in August 2020 (2015-2018 Edge, 2016-2018 MKX). Ford later expanded front brake hose action to a broader 2013-2019 Fusion and Edge population under 23S12, so an Edge that was already 'done' under 20S42 may still have open work.

On the 2015-2024 Ford Edge, the second generation Edge equipped with the panoramic vista sunroof experiences spontaneous glass cracking or shattering with no external impact. Owners report hearing a loud pop followed by discovering the rear pane of the sunroof shattered. The issue is attributed to thermal stress on the tempered glass panel, manufacturing defects in the glass, and frame flex during driving. NHTSA has received numerous complaints about this defect. The glass shatters into small pieces that rain down into the cabin.

On the 2007-2020 Ford Edge, the plastic-geared temperature blend door actuators in the Edge's HVAC case strip their internal gears or lose their position feedback. The classic presentation is full heat on one side of the cabin and cold air on the other on a dual-zone system, or a system stuck on one temperature regardless of what the panel is set to. Most owners hear a repetitive tick/click from behind the dash near the accelerator pedal area or the center console as the actuator hunts for a position it can no longer reach. Mode and recirculation actuators fail the same way, giving defrost-only airflow or no recirc. It is frequently misdiagnosed as a plugged heater core, which produces cold air on BOTH sides rather than a split.

On the 2015-2024 Ford Edge, the 2015+ Edge rear shock absorbers fail prematurely, often between 40,000-70,000 miles. The shocks begin leaking oil from the seals, causing a bouncy ride, poor handling over bumps, and excessive body roll. Sport and ST models with adaptive dampers are more expensive to replace.
