2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Problems: 12 Known Issues

On the 2021-2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has a critical design issue where a depleted 12V auxiliary battery can cause the electronic door latches to become inoperable, potentially trapping occupants inside the vehicle. The doors use electronic latches, and if the 12V battery discharges below 8.4V at key-off the e-latches keep their locked state, so a front door opened with the mechanical inside release handle and then shut stays locked, locking the driver out and potentially trapping an occupant who cannot use the inside release handles, such as a child in the rear seat. Ford recalled 197,432 vehicles (NHTSA 25V404000) to address this with a software update. The 12V battery in the Mach-E is under heavy load from constant electronic systems and can drain faster than in conventional vehicles, especially in cold weather or if the vehicle sits unused for extended periods.

On the 2021-2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the 2021-2022 Mustang Mach-E can experience overheating of the high-voltage battery main contactors, which are the switches that route power from the battery to the drive motors. When a contactor overheats, the vehicle can suddenly lose all drive power while moving, creating a serious safety hazard. The overheating is triggered by DC fast charging sessions and/or aggressive acceleration ("wide-open pedal events"). Ford issued recall 22S41 (NHTSA 22V412) as a software update, then recall 23S56 (NHTSA 23V687, expanded by 25V441) to replace the high-voltage battery junction box on extended-range-battery vehicles; recall 25S14 (NHTSA 25V130) covers vehicles repaired incorrectly under 22S41.

Symptoms include wind noise, water leaks around the glass edges, and visible gaps between the glass and body.

On the 2021-2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Mustang Mach-E windshield is prone to developing stress cracks that originate from the edges without any rock chip or impact. The large, steeply raked windshield is under significant structural stress, and temperature changes can trigger crack propagation. The windshield also houses sensors for Lane Centering and adaptive cruise control, making replacement expensive due to required ADAS camera recalibration. Some owners have replaced the windshield 2-3 times.

Water intrudes past the seals on the liftgate-mounted rear lamp assemblies and collects inside the liftgate structure. Beyond the nuisance, trapped water in a liftgate that houses lamp assemblies, the latch mechanism, and their wiring creates a corrosion and electrical-fault path over time. Forum reports note that where re-sealing the lamps did not stop the leak, the rear Pony badge was the culprit - it is retained by two pins that pass through the hatch skin and can admit water on its own.

On the 2021-2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E, nHTSA opened a Preliminary Evaluation in April 2024 into Ford's BlueCruise hands-free driving system after two separate nighttime collisions in which a Mustang Mach-E struck a stationary or disabled vehicle on an interstate, killing three people. In the February 2024 San Antonio crash a Honda CR-V was stopped in a travel lane without hazards or lights; the Mach-E did not brake or swerve and the CR-V's driver was killed. In January 2025 NHTSA escalated the probe to an Engineering Analysis - the last step before a recall demand - covering 129,222 model year 2021-2024 Mustang Mach-E vehicles. NHTSA's stated concern is that the adaptive cruise control portion of BlueCruise is programmed to disregard stationary objects above roughly 62 mph, and that the camera-and-radar sensor set has limited ability to detect certain stationary objects at highway speed in poor visibility. As of April 2026 NHTSA had three separate BlueCruise investigations open. This is an open investigation, not a recall - no remedy has been ordered.

On the 2021-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, a software error in the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) - the SYNC 4/4A computer that renders the camera feed - can cause the rearview camera image to be delayed, to freeze on a stale frame, or to not appear at all when the driver shifts into reverse. This is the Mach-E's slice of one of Ford's largest software recalls, covering roughly 1,076,138 vehicles (8,965 of them Mach-E) across the Bronco, F-150, Edge, Escape, Super Duty, Expedition, Transit, Ranger, Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus, Navigator and Corsair lines. A frozen image is more dangerous than a blank one, because the driver sees a plausible but out-of-date view behind the vehicle. The root cause is the same center-screen freeze, black screen and reboot seen in general SYNC 4A complaints; this campaign covers the cases where that reboot happens while reversing.

Loss of power brake assist markedly increases stopping distance, and losing ABS and stability control together can cause loss of vehicle control. Ford reported no crashes or injuries.

On the 2021-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, ford recalled 42,784 Mustang Mach-E crossovers in July 2026 because the pinion shaft inside the rear differential/reduction gear assembly can bend, fracture or break. Ford's Product Development team tore down a failed rear differential recovered from a 2023 Mach-E in Europe in March 2026, then analyzed failed pinion shafts from six additional warranty-return units between March and May 2026; all had experienced bending fatigue failures. When the shaft breaks, torque is no longer transmitted through the rear drive unit, which can produce a sudden loss of propulsion while driving. Because the park pawl acts through the same gearset, a fractured pinion shaft can also allow the vehicle to roll away while shifted to Park if the electronic parking brake is not set. As of June 11, 2026 Ford had logged 62 warranty claims, 14 global quality-indicator reports, four customer contact-center reports and two European field alerts. No crashes, injuries or fires were reported at filing.
