2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E Problems: 10 Known Issues

On the 2021-2025 Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has a critical design issue where a depleted 12V auxiliary battery can cause the electronic door latches to become inoperable, potentially trapping occupants inside the vehicle. The doors use electronic latches, and if the 12V battery discharges below 8.4V at key-off the e-latches keep their locked state, so a front door opened with the mechanical inside release handle and then shut stays locked, locking the driver out and potentially trapping an occupant who cannot use the inside release handles, such as a child in the rear seat. Ford recalled 197,432 vehicles (NHTSA 25V404000) to address this with a software update. The 12V battery in the Mach-E is under heavy load from constant electronic systems and can drain faster than in conventional vehicles, especially in cold weather or if the vehicle sits unused for extended periods.

As of April 2026 NHTSA had three separate BlueCruise investigations open. This is an open investigation, not a recall - no remedy has been ordered.

On the 2021-2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, a software error in the Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) - the SYNC 4/4A computer that renders the camera feed - can cause the rearview camera image to be delayed, to freeze on a stale frame, or to not appear at all when the driver shifts into reverse. On the 2023-2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E, ford recalled 86,852 vehicles (amended from an initial 37,371) - 25,279 of them Mustang Mach-E - because the front windshield wiper motor can become completely inoperative. Ford's investigation found that sealer was improperly applied between the wiper motor gear cover and the gear housing, allowing water to intrude into the motor and kill it. The affected Mach-E population is build-date gated: 2023-2024 model year vehicles built June 19, 2023 through September 29, 2023. The same suspect motors went into the 2023-2024 Maverick (21,337 units) and 2023-2024 Bronco Sport (40,236 units), so this is a shared supplier part rather than a Mach-E design flaw - but NHTSA and Ford both name the Mach-E explicitly. Total wiper failure in rain or snow eliminates forward visibility and increases crash risk. Ford's recall report lists no warning before the motor fails, and failures are more likely after the car has been through heavy rain or repeated car washes.

Because the park pawl acts through the same gearset, a fractured pinion shaft can also allow the vehicle to roll away while shifted to Park if the electronic parking brake is not set. As of June 11, 2026 Ford had logged 62 warranty claims, 14 global quality-indicator reports, four customer contact-center reports and two European field alerts. No crashes, injuries or fires were reported at filing.

Water intrudes past the seals on the liftgate-mounted rear lamp assemblies and collects inside the liftgate structure. Owners describe water pouring out of the liftgate close button, the latch, or the handle when the hatch is opened after rain or a car wash, and in some cases pooling in the cargo area. Beyond the nuisance, trapped water in a liftgate that houses lamp assemblies, the latch mechanism, and their wiring creates a corrosion and electrical-fault path over time. Forum reports note that where re-sealing the lamps did not stop the leak, the rear Pony badge was the culprit - it is retained by two pins that pass through the hatch skin and can admit water on its own.
