Mk7.5 (2017-2018) Golf R cars fitted with the DQ381 7-speed wet-clutch DSG exhibit an intermittent fault where the transmission momentarily drops into neutral while driving, then re-engages after 1-2 seconds, accompanied by the gear indicator briefly disappearing from the digital cluster. The event is unpredictable across throttle inputs and both Drive and Sport modes, on stock and tuned cars, and frequently logs NO fault codes, making it hard to diagnose. Forum investigation points to a signal/communications problem between the mechatronic unit and the engine-speed sensor, with a suspected cracked wire in the ECU-to-TCU loom; broader DQ381 mechatronic faults (solenoid/clutch-regulation errors) can also trigger limp mode and PRNDS warning flashes. The 7-speed wet-clutch DSG (DQ381, gearbox code 0GC) fitted to MK7.5 and MK8 Golf R is prone to mechatronic (TCU/valve body) faults. Owners on VWROC, GOLFMK7 and German forums report sudden limp mode, harsh or jerky shifting when the transmission is hot, free-revving/delayed gear engagement, unexpected drops into neutral, and 'Gearbox Malfunction' dashboard warnings. Faults often appear after sustained spirited driving or in stop-start traffic, and become more frequent on tuned (Stage 1/2) cars that exceed factory torque, but stock cars are also affected. Infrequent fluid/filter changes accelerate the problem.

The 2.0 TSI EA888 Gen 3 (CJXC/DJHA engine codes) in the Mk7/Mk7.5 Golf R is prone to timing chain stretch and timing chain tensioner degradation, typically surfacing around 100,000-140,000 km. The plastic-bodied tensioner loses hydraulic tension and the chain develops slack, allowing the chain to skip teeth. In severe cases the timing jumps (owners report a slip of ~1.5 teeth), throwing a crankshaft/camshaft correlation fault and, if it lets go at speed, causing piston-to-valve contact and major internal damage. The direct-injected EA888 Gen 3 engine in the Golf R accumulates heavy carbon deposits on the intake valve faces, just like all GDI engines. The electronically-controlled diverter valve (DV) on the Mk7 Golf R IS38 turbocharger develops a torn diaphragm that causes boost leaks. The DV recirculates boost pressure when the throttle is closed; when the diaphragm tears, boost pressure escapes through the valve continuously. The crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve, integrated into the valve cover/oil separator on the EA888 Gen3 (and carried into Gen4), commonly fails when the internal rubber diaphragm or check valve tears or sticks. This disrupts crankcase pressure regulation, causing rough idle, misfires, lean/rich fuel-trim codes, a whistling or sucking noise, and elevated oil consumption. Critically, a failed PCV can pull excessive vacuum and blow out the rear main seal, turning a cheap part failure into a labor-intensive oil leak that requires separating the transmission from the engine. The Golf R's IHI IS38 turbocharger develops a characteristic wastegate rattle as the wastegate valve, linkage rod and bushings wear and develop play. Owners describe a light metallic rattling/tapping noise heard under light load and on deceleration, typically between roughly 1,500-3,000 rpm. Separately, the IS38's electronic wastegate actuator (vacuum/electronic position control) is itself prone to premature failure, which can cause boost-control errors and EPC faults without necessarily requiring a full turbo replacement. The noise is mechanically benign early on but indicates progressing wear of the wastegate mechanism.

NHTSA recall 22V707000 (VW recall code 19Q8) covers certain 2022-2023 Mk8 Golf R (and Golf GTI) vehicles in which the radiator may not have been correctly affixed to the intercooler during production. The radiator can work loose and allow a coolant hose to contact the V-belt pulley, chafing and damaging the hose. A damaged hose can leak coolant, causing the engine to overheat and creating a fire risk, and a large coolant spill onto the road can raise crash risk for other vehicles. This is a documented manufacturing/assembly defect, not a wear item.

The plastic thermostat/water pump housing cracks, leaking coolant. This is the signature EA888 engine failure shared across the VW/Audi lineup. Usually fails between 50,000-80,000 miles.

Separate from the well-known water-pump/thermostat-housing leak, MK7-platform Golf R owners report failures of the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor and a notably unreliable dashboard temperature gauge. The gauge tends to sit pinned at ~90C and gives little warning before overheating, so coolant loss or a failing sensor can let the engine run dangerously hot without alerting the driver. A faulty ECT sensor also causes erratic readings, false overheat warnings, poor cold-start fueling/economy, and a check engine light. VW updated early sensor revisions.

The Golf R uses a Haldex (Gen 4 on Mk6, Gen 5 on Mk7) rear differential coupling for its AWD system. The Haldex pump and filter become clogged with clutch plate debris, reducing the system's ability to send power to the rear wheels. When clogged, the Golf R behaves essentially as a front-wheel-drive car during spirited driving, with the rear axle not engaging. The Mk8 (8th-gen) Golf R's MIB3 infotainment system has been widely criticized for lag, freezing, unresponsive capacitive touch sliders (volume/temperature), and crashes, particularly on 2020-2022 production cars. When the system freezes, climate functions controlled through the touchscreen become inaccessible until the car is restarted. MK7/MK7.5 Golf R owners widely report creaking, clunking or rattly knocking from the front suspension, particularly over speed bumps, at low speed, or when turning onto inclined driveways. The noise is commonly traced to the front lower control arm bushings and the upper strut mounts (shared across Golf/GTI/R). VW issued guidance to grease the bushings to quiet customer complaints, but the noise often returns and full bushing/strut-mount replacement is frequently needed. The EVAP system on MQB-platform Golf R (MK7/MK7.5, with some MK8 cases) frequently throws evaporative-emissions leak faults. The most common culprit is the N80 purge valve failing to seal, but the leak-detection pump, carbon (charcoal) canister breakdown, and saturated canister from overfilling the tank also trigger codes. Symptoms are a check engine light with small- or large-leak codes, occasional rough idle or hesitation just after start, and sometimes a fuel smell.
