2017 Chevrolet Express Problems: 10 Known Issues

On the 2013-2019 Chevrolet Express, this one is specific to the cutaway body, which is exactly the fitment trap on this nameplate. GM recalled 2013-2019 Chevrolet Express Cutaway and GMC Savana Cutaway vehicles built with the optional GM-provided body mounts (RPO BNC) because the brake lines were not routed with the recommended clearance to those mounts. Where the line touches the mount, road vibration wears through the tube wall and the system loses brake fluid, which means reduced stopping performance or, at the extreme, service brakes that do not work. GM opened the investigation on June 26, 2024 after Transport Canada reported 18 incidents of brake line wear or damage from body mount contact on upfitted 2018 and 2019 cutaways. Roughly 11,966 Chevy Express cutaways were covered (plus about 6,359 Savana cutaways). Cargo and passenger vans on the standard body are not part of this campaign - always confirm the body style before quoting it.

On the 2003-2024 Chevrolet Express, the Express uses a sealed front hub/bearing assembly with the ABS wheel speed sensor built into the top of the unit. Two things go wrong. First, on a heavily loaded van the bearing itself wears out and produces a roar or growl that rises with road speed and changes when you sway the van side to side. Second, the seal at the ABS pickup lets water into the hub, which both destroys the bearing from the inside and corrupts the speed sensor signal - so the ABS and traction lights come on before any noise is obvious. Because the sensor is inside the hub, you cannot service the sensor separately; the whole assembly gets replaced. Owners also report a distinct pattern of ABS faults appearing right after a hub replacement when a low-cost assembly was used, which is a real and repeatable trap on this platform. GM previously recalled certain 2003 Express vans built without the wheel bearing retaining nut (NHTSA 02V305), which could allow the bearing to separate and disabled the ABS - a related but separate manufacturing defect.

On the 2014-2017 Chevrolet Express, gM recalled more than 207,000 2014-2017 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans because liquid can leak into the driver's door power window switch and corrode the circuit board. The corrosion creates high electrical resistance at the switch contacts, which generates heat and can start a fire inside the door panel. GM engineers acknowledged the intruding liquid could be anything - rain through an open window, a spilled drink set on the armrest - which is precisely why it hits work vans so hard: the driver's door of a delivery or service van is opened and rained into hundreds of times a week. The warning sequence owners describe is a driver's window that starts behaving erratically or stops working, followed by smoke or a burning-plastic odor from the door panel. GM's internal number for the campaign is 18155; the NHTSA campaign is 18V295.

On the 2008-2025 Chevrolet Express, the wheel speed sensors and their wiring are prone to failure due to the harsh commercial-use environment, causing the StabiliTrak and ABS systems to falsely activate during normal driving. The ABS unexpectedly engages during normal braking, extending stopping distances. The tone rings on the hub bearings also corrode.

On the 2003-2022 Chevrolet Express, in-tank fuel pump fails causing stalling, hard starts, and no-start conditions. Often fails without warning on high-mileage vans.

On the 2017-2018 Chevrolet Express, vans built with the 6.0L L96/LC8 Vortec V8 (the volume engine in Express 2500/3500 from 2010 on) can break a rocker arm, producing an engine tick and a hard misfire on one cylinder. GM addressed it in preliminary information bulletin PIP5522B, which specifically lists 2017-2018 Chevrolet Express among the affected vehicles and warns that a broken rocker arm can let the valve drop into the cylinder and cause catastrophic engine failure. Important generation/engine discipline: the Express 4.8L L20 and 6.0L L96 do NOT use Active Fuel Management, so the AFM collapsing-lifter story that plagues Silverado/Tahoe 5.3L and 6.2L engines does not apply to these vans - this is a rocker/valvetrain hardware failure, not an AFM lifter failure. Owners typically hear a distinct top-end tick that does not go away as the engine warms, followed by a stored misfire code. A separate, narrower valve-spring concern (GM PIP5752A) applies to engines built roughly June 1 through September 15, 2020, including the 6.6L L8T used in later Express vans, but not the 6.0L L96.

On the 2010-2020 Chevrolet Express, when the Express moved to the 6L80 and 6L90 six-speed for the 2010 and later vans, it inherited that family's torque converter clutch problem. The TCC lining delaminates, and the shed material scores the fluid pump - so what starts as a light shudder felt at steady cruise, often described as a chuggle or 'fish bite' between roughly 35 and 60 mph, progresses into a pump and converter failure that takes the whole transmission with it. GM's own path on the complaint is graduated: TCM reprogramming for the chuggle concern, then a fluid exchange to the specified low-viscosity synthetic ATF, and finally converter replacement when the clutch is too far gone. That progression is exactly why the shudder must not be ignored - the flush only works if the wear is caught early. Documented as a 2010 and newer issue only; do not attribute it to the 4L60E/4L80E vans.

On the 2003-2020 Chevrolet Express, the cast-iron exhaust manifolds on the Vortec small-block V8s bolt to aluminum cylinder heads. The two materials expand at very different rates, and after thousands of heat cycles the manifold repeatedly loads the outer bolts until they snap - almost always the front-most and rear-most bolt on each head. Express fleets see this constantly: one operator running roughly seventeen 15-passenger Express vans, all with the 6.0L, reported the same manifolds breaking bolts at the front and rear of the head on both banks across the whole fleet. The tell is a sharp exhaust tick at cold start that fades or disappears once the engine is fully warm and the metal expands enough to seal the gap - which is exactly how you separate this from a genuine lifter or rocker problem. Left alone the leak burns the manifold gasket, can cook nearby wiring and oxygen sensor leads, and can throw catalyst-efficiency or lean codes.

On the 1996-2024 Chevrolet Express, express vans ordered with rear air conditioning - which is most passenger and shuttle configurations - run refrigerant and coolant lines the full length of the body to a rear evaporator and heater core mounted behind the interior trim. That long run is the system's weak point. Leaks show up at the rear evaporator O-rings, at the rear line junctions and crimps, and at the expansion valve, and because the lines are buried behind panels the leak is slow and invisible: the owner just notices the A/C getting weaker every summer until it blows warm. The same run of rear heater hard lines leaks coolant at the front junctions, which is why so many Express owners on the forums end up looping or deleting the rear heater circuit entirely rather than chasing it. Diagnosis is the expensive part - shops frequently recharge the system two or three times before anyone commits to pulling the interior.

On the 1996-2025 Chevrolet Express, the front door hinge pins and bushings wear out from the heavy doors and frequent commercial use, causing the doors to sag. Sagging doors do not latch properly, create wind noise, and are difficult to close. The driver door is typically the first to sag due to heavier usage.
