2014 Nissan Rogue Problems: 22 Known Issues

On the 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue, the Nissan Rogue's CVT transmission is prone to premature failure, shuddering, and jerky operation. The mechanism is a shift-position disagreement, not a key or starter fault. The console selector pulls a shift control cable to a manual lever on top of the CVT, and the transmission range switch (inhibition switch) on that lever reports which gear the transaxle is mechanically in. Before energising the starter the BCM requires a valid shift-position status. When the cable is misadjusted, the manual lever rests just off the Park detent while the console lever feels perfectly seated, so the range switch output is ambiguous, and the BCM stores B2603 (Shift Position Status) after seeing the invalid condition for 500 ms or more with the ignition ON. The bulletin's confirming code is B2604 (PNP/Clutch Switch), and it states B2603 along with P0705 / P0706 (T/M Range Sensor A) may also be stored. Because the Rogue's hardware differs from the Altima and Pathfinder, Nissan specifies a lower cable nut torque and a longer labor time for this model. The same era of Rogue has separate, unrelated shifter trouble: NHTSA recall 15V-775 covered roughly 33,880 2015 Rogues built February 10 to May 13, 2015, for a shift selector knob with uneven spring pressure that allowed shifting out of Park without the brake pedal depressed, a rollaway risk. That recall is a knob-and-spring defect, not the B2603 cable adjustment, but a Rogue with odd shifter behaviour is worth checking against both.

On the 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue, there have been reports of the panoramic sunroof spontaneously shattering or exploding while driving or parked. This appears to happen without any external impact. The cause may be related to glass stress or defects.

On the 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue QR25DE 2.5L, rogues equipped with the factory panoramic moonroof can have the glass spontaneously shatter or 'explode' while driving, with no impact and nothing striking it from outside, showering occupants with glass and in some cases causing injury. On the 2014-2016 Nissan Rogue QR25DE 2.5L, nHTSA recall 22V-024 covers certain 2014-2016 Rogue vehicles. Water and salt in the driver footwell can wick along dash-side harness tape into a connector, causing corrosion, electrical malfunctions, battery discharge, thermal damage and potentially fire.

On the 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue, the A/C compressor can fail prematurely, particularly in hot climates with heavy A/C usage. Internal compressor failure can contaminate the entire A/C system with metal debris, requiring extensive repairs.

On the 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue, on 2014-2017 Rogues, water or road salt in the driver's footwell can wick up the harness tape into the dash side harness connector and corrode it. Nissan's recalls list battery discharge as one result, along with an inoperative driver power window or power seat and an AWD warning light; in rare cases the corroded connector can overheat. 2018 and later Rogues got a sealed, waterproof connector from the start of production.

On the 2014-2018 Nissan Rogue, the electric power steering system can experience issues including sudden loss of assist, heavy steering, or steering warning lights. The steering may feel inconsistent or require more effort in certain situations.

On the 2014-2020 Nissan Rogue 2.5L QR25DE, the sealed front wheel hub/bearing assemblies wear out and produce a humming, roaring, or growling noise that rises with vehicle speed and changes when the vehicle is loaded side-to-side in a turn (turn left, noise from right = right bearing bad, and vice versa). Failures are commonly reported between roughly 60k-100k miles. Because the bearing is integrated into the hub assembly, the internal bearing cannot be serviced separately — the whole hub is replaced.

This is a different mechanism and era from the VC-Turbo polymer-gear fracture recall.

On the 2014-2016 Nissan Rogue QR25DE 2.5L, a frequently reported issue (nearly 200 reports) is an inaccurate fuel gauge driven by a failing fuel level sending unit inside the tank. Owners see the gauge read full when the tank is half empty, read near-empty with a full tank, the low-fuel warning trigger prematurely, or the gauge start at zero on key-on. The float/sender resistance drifts out of spec, sometimes setting code P0463 (fuel level sensor circuit high input). Nissan has recalled fuel level sending units on certain 2006 and 2008 Frontier, Pathfinder and Xterra trucks (NHTSA 10V-075), but not on the Rogue.

A class-action settlement covered certain white-painted 2013 Rogues, but complaints span 2011-2020 across multiple colors. Nissan was alleged to have known of the defect. On the 2008-2020 Nissan Rogue QR25DE 2.5L I4, p0128 means the engine did not reach normal operating temperature (about 195-205°F) within the ECM's expected time, or coolant temperature drops at highway speed. The QR25DE 2.5L in the Rogue has a distinctive cooling system with TWO regulating components: the main thermostat AND a secondary 'water control valve.' Either one stuck open lets coolant flow too freely, so the engine runs cool and the ECM sets P0128. This is the single most common trigger on this platform, and a frequent gotcha is that replacing only the main thermostat leaves the still-stuck water control valve, so the code returns. A stuck-cool engine hurts fuel economy, delays proper cabin heat, and keeps the engine in open-loop enrichment longer.
