2016 Ford Focus Problems: 13 Known Issues

On the 2016-2017 Ford Focus 2.3L EcoBoost I4, ford program 17B32 addressed possible head-gasket coolant leakage into combustion chambers on certain 2016-2017 Focus RS vehicles built August 3, 2015 through July 6, 2017. Low coolant without an external leak and white exhaust smoke were identified symptoms; they require diagnosis, not continued driving to reproduce.

On the 2016-2018 Ford Focus 1.0L EcoBoost (Fox), ford issued safety recall 23V905000 covering 2016-2018 Focus models, in which the oil pump drive belt or the oil pump drive belt tensioner may fail. When either component fails, the engine loses oil pressure. Per NHTSA's stated consequence, a loss of oil pressure can cause the engine to stall, and once the engine stops running the driver also loses power braking assist - which is why the agency treats this as a crash risk rather than a purely mechanical inconvenience. Ford acknowledged that some engines are destroyed before the recall repair happens: the remedy specifically provides for full engine replacement where the oil pump belt or tensioner has already caused engine failure. The campaign as a whole covers 139,730 vehicles across every model included in it; that figure is campaign-wide and is not a count of Focus vehicles. Owner notification letters were mailed August 11, 2025, so a Focus that has changed hands may never have had the letter reach its current owner.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus, the 2.0L GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) and 2.0L EcoBoost engines in 2012-2018 Ford Focus accumulate carbon deposits on the intake valves over time because direct injection fuel never washes over the valve faces. Oil vapors from the PCV system coat the intake valves and harden into carbon deposits over 60,000-100,000 miles. As deposits build up, they restrict airflow, cause rough idle, misfires, and reduced power. This is a maintenance issue inherent to all direct-injection engines (BMW, VW, Ford, etc.) and is not covered under warranty except in severe cases. The only effective permanent repair is walnut blasting the intake valves.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus, the Mk3 Focus uses a three-mount layout: a fluid-filled hydraulic mount on the passenger side, a solid transmission mount on the driver side, and a rear torque strut ("dogbone"). The passenger-side hydraulic mount is the weak link - the rubber cracks, the damping fluid leaks out, and the mount can no longer absorb the engine's second-order shake. Owners feel a coarse vibration through the steering wheel, seat, and pedals at idle, worst in Drive at a stoplight and when the A/C compressor cycles. Many owners chase this as an engine or transmission fault first. A related but distinct complaint is rocks and road debris packing into the rear torque strut mount, which produces a clunk or vibration in reverse and is cured by cleaning it out and fitting a shield.

On the 2013-2018 Ford Focus 2.0L EcoBoost, on the 2.0L EcoBoost Focus ST the plastic charge pipe couplers between the turbo, front-mount intercooler, and throttle body are held by spring clamps and blow off or work loose under sustained boost, especially after any tune or intercooler change. The stock bypass/blow-off valve diaphragm and the sound symposer diaphragm also split, venting charge air. The result is an abrupt loss of thrust, a loud whoosh or pop under acceleration, limp mode, and boost-pressure DTCs. Driving with a large boost leak makes the turbo overspeed while the ECU chases a target it cannot hit, so it is not a cosmetic complaint.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus, the Mk3 four-cylinders use an RTV-sealed aluminum front cover rather than a gasket. The RTV bead fails at the cover-to-block joint and around the variable cam timing (VCT) solenoid bores, letting oil weep down the front of the block onto the subframe and, on the ST, onto the turbo area where it smokes. Owners commonly report a quart lost every 2,000-3,000 miles with no smoke and no coolant contamination, and Ford technicians name front cover leaks (with lower control arm bushings) as the single most frequent Mk3 warranty complaint. Some cars have leaked at under 25,000 miles.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus 2.0L GDI, the DPS6 PowerShift 6-speed dual-clutch automated transmission fitted to 2012-2018 Ford Focus (and 2011-2019 Fiesta) is widely considered one of the worst transmission designs in modern automotive history. The dry dual-clutch design was fundamentally unsuited for stop-and-go driving, producing violent shuddering during low-speed acceleration, hesitation when pulling away from stops, unexpected surging, and abrupt harsh shifts. Ford knew of the defects from the start but concealed them and continued selling vehicles. The Vargas class action resulted in a settlement covering 2012-2016 Focus and 2011-2016 Fiesta models. Ford issued dozens of TSBs and software reflashes that repeatedly failed to fix the underlying mechanical problem. The TCM (Transmission Control Module) failures are a distinct but related issue. Repair options include clutch replacement (temporary fix), TCM reprogramming, or complete transmission replacement.

On the 2012-2016 Ford Focus 2.0L Ti-VCT GDI, separate from the clutch shudder that made the PowerShift famous, the DPS6's mechatronic Transmission Control Module - the electronic unit that drives the two shift actuators inside the case - suffers its own solder-joint and internal circuit failures. Failure is usually abrupt rather than progressive: the cluster throws "Transmission Malfunction - Service Now", the car drops out of gear, refuses to shift, or will not move at all, sometimes from highway speed. Clutch actuator control circuit codes (P0902, P090C, P2872, P0910/P0911) are the giveaway. Ford issued Field Service Action 15B22 (TCM reprogramming) and extended TCM coverage to 10 years / 150,000 miles under customer satisfaction programs, which is why so many owners get a TCM replaced at no charge.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus 23 kWh / 33.5 kWh HV battery (BEV), on the battery-electric Focus, the high-voltage pack's main positive and negative contactors (relays) fail - either welding stuck closed or burning their contacts open. When a contactor faults, the on-board charger cannot close the HV circuit, so the car reports a charging fault, refuses to accept AC from either the 120V convenience cord or a 240V EVSE, and may throw HV isolation faults. Owners on the Focus Electric community have traced dead-charge conditions to burnt contactors in the upper pack, sometimes alongside coolant intrusion into the pack, and Ford also issued service information for HV packs that will not charge on the second-generation 120V charge cord.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus, the washer reservoir and pump seal leaks, and washer fluid runs down the pump's wiring. Capillary action carries the fluid inside the wire insulation the full length of the harness to the BCM connector in the passenger footwell, where it corrodes the pins and the module itself. The result is a car full of unrelated electrical faults - flickering lights, dead windows and locks, random warning messages, phantom battery drain overnight, and eventually a no-start. Replacing the BCM without fixing the leak and the wet harness simply kills the new module, which is why owners often go through two.

On the 2008-2018 Ford Focus, the Focus door ajar switch integrated into the door latch assembly fails, causing the dash to display a door ajar warning when all doors are closed. This also keeps the interior dome lights on, which drains the battery overnight. The latch switch corrodes or wears out, sending a false open signal to the body control module. Any of the four doors can be affected, though the driver door is most common.

On the 2012-2016 Ford Focus, the 2012 Mk3 Focus was the first Focus with a fully electric rack-mounted power steering assist (EPAS). The torque/position sensor and motor assembly inside the rack, and the power steering control module (PSCM) integrated with it, fail intermittently - often heat-soaked on long drives or hot days. The dash shows "Power Steering Assist Fault - Service Now", the wheel goes heavy with no warning, and steering no longer self-centers. Failures are frequently intermittent at first (assist returns after a key cycle) and then become permanent. Because the assist motor is integral to the rack, Ford's repair is a complete steering gear replacement. Unlike the Fusion/Taurus/Flex family, which got NHTSA recall 15V340 for the same motor-sensor defect, the Focus was never recalled despite hundreds of NHTSA complaints, and was instead the subject of a class-action suit covering 2012-2014 Focus and Focus Electric.

On the 2012-2018 Ford Focus, the 2012-2018 Ford Focus with the 2.0L GDI engine experiences frequent canister purge valve (CPV) failures that cause rough idle, stalling, difficulty starting (especially after refueling), and fuel-related DTCs. The purge valve sticks open, allowing fuel vapors to flood the intake manifold at inappropriate times. This is separate from the carbon buildup issue and is one of the most commonly replaced components on the 2012-2018 Focus. Ford recalled 2012-2018 Focus cars with the 2.0L GDI and 2.0L GTDI (ST) engines under safety recall 18V735 (Ford 18S32) because a malfunctioning CPV can create excessive vacuum in the fuel vapor system and stall the engine; follow-up recalls 19V515 (Ford 19S22) and 26V369 (Ford 26S40) cover cars whose PCM update was missed or done incorrectly.
